Master cylinder fault?

I'm trying to get the bottom of my brake issue - When pulling up behind another car in traffic I occasionally lose braking when pedal is depressed - pressing it harder does nothing, but if i release and press again it will stop ok. Pushing the brake pedal to do emergency hard stops is fine - it is only happening when gently stopping. I've changed the pads and topped the fluid. Is this a sign that fluid is passing through the master cylinder or have I a different problem?

would this be similar to the symptoms that necessitated the recall on the brakes?

sounds like oil from the vaccum pump in the master cylinder, the recall stops this with modified vaccum hose and they'll replace the master cylinder too if its contaminated

land rover rejected brake fix

Just heard back from garage - vacuum servo full of oil, need new pipes cylinder etc - but LR have rejected on the grounds of age - its a 56 with 88k and the recall was done nov '10. What should a say when calling LR customer services as others have been fixed at their cost?

I wonder why it wasn't picked up as recall job at any service. Has it only been serviced by indies since out of warranty?

Regardless of whether or not your car has already had the recall done, this is a serious design fault and Land Rover should be addressing it, no question.

If the recall was only done in November 2010, I would suggest the master cylinder was already contaminated with a decent quantity of oil before they fitted the Heath-Robinson arrangement of pipework that was supposed to alleviate the problem.

Tell them to go back and try again, this time fitting a new master cylinder (which they probably didn't bother doing the first time to save money). Others have had some traction with this, recently.

Pete@LandRover may be able to assist if you don't get anywhere.
