?juddering / transfer box

Today sees the next challange in keeping my beloved D3 going but I am a bit worried this could be a more critical fault. Any suggestions/ideas would be most welcome.

As usual I got in, started up, everything good. Started to reverse and apply full lock, then came the really bad juddering. On doing a bit more forward/back and left/right it appears that the juddering happens at very low manouvering speeds or when starting to move when the steering is 90% or more toward full lock. The juddering is also apparent in both forward/reverse and/or left/right.

The good news is that when the steering is less agressive or speed is a bit higher then the juddering is not apparent.

The local inde is maxed out for a bit and cant look till next week so until then I can see if I can get a diagnosis with your help and decide if it is D4 time or is it worth getting it fixed.

If its only near full lock, it would suggest front diff. Relatively cheap fix. Bodsy has changed his Thumbs Up

diff as has been said before, get um to drain the front and rear diff and put some container under each to see what comes out with the old oil.

BTW make sure they use the correct grade of diff oil if yours has a locking diff, see the back of yer destruction book for details Thumbs Up

Further update!

Front diff appears to look OK.

We are now replacing the transfer box which was also prone to fail on early examples!!

Yes very much a judder and noise underneath, from clonking, banging to the odd grind or so.
Steering didnt have to be on or near full lock when it started.

Apparently clutch in tf box was engaged when it wasnt needed

I've had exactly the same happen to my 06 tdv6 s, and indeed the final diagnosis after much head scratching was a faulty transfer box...

Recently had this......Indy changed the transfer box oil and re-calibrated the transfer box ecu....all is now well....I would suggest everybody try that before full replacement ?
