Tinted windows and Insurance |
|
Hi All, My first Post so be kind!
I am a land rover virgin and have recently purchased a 2005 Disco 3 HSE (i love it)
I didnt put tinted windows on my insurance quote ( as i was under the impression they came with the car and therefore not a mod??)
They kindly charged me £60.00 for the pleasure ( I didnt even receive a letter to inform me. i did have an email to an account i never check!)
Can anyone inform me if this is right? And if i need to declare anything else before they sting me again, as far as i am aware all the 'mods' on the car came with it as its HSE ?
Thank you in advance
Jemma

Welcome Jemma
My understanding is if it was spec'd on the car when it was built (factory fitted tints) then that is included under your normal insurance however if you are not the original owner that apparently can be difficult to price it was spec'd like that when it was built.
For my tints I declared them and they added a few quid onto the price but it was not as much as £60.
Hope that helps!

Depends on the insurer in my experience.
The company I am with (Admiral) say that as long is the car is as it left the factory then it doesn't specifically have to be declared, unless it is an item that is part of their initial "interrogation" I.E an item specifically asked about "Does it have Tinted windows?"
It seems very hit and miss to be honest.

I do know some of some people peeling them off if and when they have to make a claim, so nobody is the wiser

I am with admiral and they said the same as mentioned above ^
I had the same problem with the 'chrome' package that mine left the factory with. It was a pain to try and convince them that is left the factory that way. So with admiral there is an external mod cover (cost me about £30 on top from memory) and that covers my sump, D4 rear lights, spare wheel protector, the 'chrome' package, spot lights & tints. I got the lady to add all of these as a note on my policy meaning they are written down as proof. And she said if I was to add anything else then just to call and she would add it to the list under the 'external mod' category. Under this they will replace like for like when claiming.
She did point out though that a sump guard is for off road and they do not cover off road I ensured her it was only for looks and I did not go off road 07 Java Black TD V6 D3, EGRs Blanked, Tow bar, Full dog guard & divider, LED Spots , DRLs, GG ATs, RLD Sump guard, RLD Spare Wheel Protector, D4 LED Rear Lights, Limo tints on boot and Midnight tint on rear windows, Kenwood screen with Garmin nav, Rear cameras, D4 Steering wheel with flappy paddles, T-max split charge system, Tree sliders, Prospeed roof rack & Ladder, Alisport fast road inter cooler,

its about what you are deemed to reasonably know -
Mine came with when I bought the car from the dealer 2 months ago - I assume it is standard but as I dont know I can't confirm either way -
as such they cannot reasonalby prove I knew they were aftermarket "modifciation" so I did not delcare it... its rear of the B pillar so not illiegal either way.
My side steps and optional choive of reducing the alloy wheel size in the winter I have declared and it didnt cost anything.
welcome to the mad house..

I'm looking at getting mine done some time in the future. What percentage tint is the normal that people go for?

recently had same issue - which surely is stupid!
Factory spec - yet Octagon, my previous insurer advised they don't insure 'modified vehicles' and this was a modification
Admiral, charged a small premium (think was about £12) for the privilege

Ive sent Diamond a stern email lol
I dont mind paying the £30 if i have too for the windows, but like ive told them they came from the factory so in my eyes are not a modification, Have told them that the £30.00 admin fee is unacceptable .. see what happens ay !

Dear Ms Connolly
Thank you for contacting us about your policy
The notification of changes was sent via email because this is how you receiv
your documentation. If the tinted windows are not an optional extra or
modification and are standard to the vehicle then we can remove them and
refund the charge of £54.38 by receiving a letter from a garage advising this
this. Please contact us on 0844334528 if you would like to discuss further.
