I think what makes this different is that it is all private ground, not green lanes. Also, LRE maintain the tracks so there is less chance of damage to vehicles...

The South Devon trip is mostly on Clinton Devon Estates land, plus some road and byway.
We did it last year, when the D4 was only about 3wks old. Some of the lanes are reasonably 'tight', but I can confirm that you can get through without damage.

Enjoy the Otter!

Still trying to find the time to do their Exmoor trip.
Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

Well, after booking it all and getting my confirmation a few weeks back I thought I would double check with my Aviva insurance to make sure I was covered. It turns out I'm not. They said because it is an 'event', I'm not covered. I could do the exact same course on my own and would have full cover, but as soon as it is a guided event with other vehicles, I'm not covered. They kept using the term 'event' to cover themselves. I've only been with them for less than 2 months, but I would loose over £100 to cancel the policy. Banging Head

So I'm going to have to ring up and cancel now as I can't risk going uninsured. Evil or Very Mad

Hey Sion, sorry to hear this, although I do note that Land Rover don't describe it as an event at all.

It is as below;

"A guided, non-competitive, off-road trip on privately owned estate land, under complete supervision."

Might be worth calling up again to say those exact words to someone else to confirm they would not cover you?

Thumbs Up

same problem I had with admiral and bailed out right away with them..ended up with landrover insurance...provided its not competitive they cover..
ive asked lre Honiton several times now why they cant or wont give a day insurance for say 20 quids
not interested,,,thinks if the did it would make life a lot simpler and may give them some more custom
lre Honiton make it PERFECTLY CLEAR in their booking docs in detailed terms hopw they see it,and I wonder if that's the trades terminology
THEY DIDNT CHECK OUR INSURANCE SO I THINK YOU COULD DO IT WITHOUT...but about 15 percent IS on public roads..and you do travel in convoy .so if you had a knock the first thing to be said is why are 15 landrovers all together

The annoying thing is. When I rang them, the woman first said that she didn't think it would be ok, so I read word for word the sentence in the letter
"A guided, non-competitive, off-road trip on privately owned estate land, under complete supervision.", she changed her mind and said she couldn't see any problem at all as it's not competitive. She put me on hold while she checked with the underwriters and after 5 mins came back and said categorically no. The fact that it is supervised and that other people will be there under the supervision of an 'instructor' makes it an 'event' according to Aviva. As I said, I could drive the exact route on my own and would be covered. It's so frustrating.

I did a quick online quote with Land Rover insurance and it is £200 more expensive than my current policy, so with the -£100 for cancelling mine, I would be £300 down just to have cover to do the 'event'. I'm going to see if Land Rover do a day insurance when I call them tomorrow, but I'm not hopeful. I have considered doing it uninsured, but it would be typical that I would slide into the back of someones disco, or worse hit someone out of their car. It's too big a risk.

I've been stewing about this all evening. I was thinking if someone on these forums organised a get together for some green laning /off roading in an area that they know and a few of us went along, would that be classified an 'event' with my insurance and void any cover if there was an incident? I've been on get togethers with the Honda VFR forums before and it never crossed my mind that I might not be insured whilst doing them. I get the feeling by calling Aviva and asking them the question, it's given them the option to say no. They do use the vague term 'event' on my policy though:
Quote:
Exclusions - Use for any competitions, trial, performance test, race or trial of speed, including off road events whether between motor vehicles or otherwise, and irrespective of whether this takes place on any circuit or track, formed or otherwise, and regardless of any statutory authorisation of any such event
Does this mean that if I stepped out of my Disco whilst off roading and took a dump in the bushes, it would be classed as an 'off-road event', so it might void my insurance? Mr. Green

Rolling with laughter @ last line!

Don't land rover insurance do a 1 week free cover online? Or is this just for when you collect from a dealer....?

Another thought is to tell them you want to cancel your insurance because it is not fit for purpose.

Land rover insurance will negotiate their price so always best to ring them.

Spoke to Land Rover Trek days this morning. They don't do single day cover, but are currently looking into it as this is very common apparently. They refunded me my money without question. Their recommendation at renewal time is NFU for off road cover, so will check them out. Really gutted I can't go, but just can't take the risk uninsured. Big Cry Hope you have a good time Parallax33.

I think the moral here is double check with your insurance if you are doing any kind of off road event. I feel if there is any way that they can worm out of paying for a claim, they will. If you have the word 'event' in your exclusions, you need to clarify what is covered.

it was only when we started these off road things that the insurance problem started...thats appears why many are cheap cus its limited cover...going to stick with someone that will give off road cover from now on....it cost more but bumps can be expensive..currently with landrover...
did wonder if the forum could get a day ticket arrangement with A plan that we could all use as situation dictates...or an arrangement with landrover...we are all driving their gear
