Unashamed note to all caravanners out there .......

Just spent a great weekend in Wales (paradox I know) went to Bala and Aberystwith .... at least thats how I spell them.

Was worried that my new twin-axle van would be too heavy and may affect towing capability - in fact it was better than before with my single axle van

My D3 towed like a dream and I was sick and tired of being held up by damn car drivers on the slightest incline

Every time I find a superlative for this vehicle I think that will be the last - sadly I dont think it will ever stop

Next on the agenda is a remap to make it possible pass some of these morons on hills Wink

I tow a Swift Challenger 540 with my D3 and have to keep an eye on the speed on motorways. Off to France in a couple of weeks and will enjoy the open roads there. Best towcar I have every had even in the standard form.

Thumbs Up

I think the hills are where the D3 shows its metal. Last week I went on a rally to Longleat, a LC was playing silly beggars after I overtook him (I read the road in front further ahead than him) It came to Portsdown hill near Portsmouth and both myself and my father left it for dead - childish but very satisfying 8) A TDV8 would be awesome, having driven the FFRR TDV8 a few times I reckon it must be about the ultimate tow car

There's a lot of "posh" outfits that I see travelling down from Germany, usually Cayennes and X5's with big airconned caravans behind. They seem to forget that although their cars a quick when not towing that it's a different story with a van behind. I like watching them in my rear view mirror when going up hills !!

I just dial in 120kmh on the cruise control and stop every 600k's for fuel.

The only problem that I find with the D3 and towing is after along stretch on the autoroute, you have to remember that it's there !!!!! Nearly took out some border control officers in Italy last year when they waved me through and I forgot that the Fendt was on the back, oops.....

Just towed an agrigultural trailer today. It had a conversion from pin hitch to towball type. Needless to say it wasn't a plesent experiance ! Reckon it was approx 3t when loaded with Horse s*$t.

I am very interested in the comments regarding towing. My wife and I tow a caravan at 1600 kgs and have towed for nearly 40 years. 4 different Discoverys in the list of tow cars. The D3 is undoubtedly the best tow vehicle but I had a couple of 3 litre Senators that towed 1400kgs like a dream. I have a query that you guys may be able to answer. My D3 has a tranmission thump when going from overrun to drive, particularly noticable when entering and leaving roundabouts and traffic lights. With the van on the back it is much more noticable and to a degree infuriating. The local dealer has changed the torque converter and the transfer box, no real difference. I have been thinking hard about "Chipping" subject to Insurance ramifications. Will this have any effect on the "Thump"? On a different tack what sort of mpg are you caravanners achieving when towin? I once saw 20.2 mpg going across to Austria but struggle to better 19mpg (averaging about 40 mph) even on long runs across the Continent. Have those of you with "chips" had to pay extra premiums?
Any comments or views please?

22-23mpg with 1600kgs on longs journeys. It can drop to below 20 when passing through the Alps, but usualy straight runs with 80% highway is 22+

Strange that always on the outward journey I get better thatn on the return journey, could be something to do with the cargo of wine.........

Can't wait for my chip to be fitted then, as I don't get that without the van. However a man in the pub who had earlier seen me collecting van from service said. I didn't realize caravans could go uphill that quick Whistle Whistle
