TDV6 broken crank?
Hi all,
I have a 2005/6 TDV6 HSE which till this morning was my baby. Driving back to work
I slowed for some roadworks and opened the window and heard the horrible clattering noise from the motor. I limped to work (only about 500m)
No warning lights, no smoke, no smell, no leaks, no fault codes.
I own and run a small garage so we changed oil and filter - oil level was fine before the fault too btw.
Still noisy.
From reading other posts I am thinking crank has cracked
Now the questions................
Engine out is a body off job?? Yes or no??
If it is crank, can we replace just crank and bearings or does it have to be a short engine?
Should I look for a replacement engine (second hand) instead?
If I do can I ship one to NZ from UK as there are none being wrecked here.
Just for the record it is a two owner full service history car with high(ish) k's at 195000. Timing belts were changed on time, always used genny filters and fully synth 5w30 oil and serviced early. It does get used off road and tows a car trailer but that is what it's built for!
I know I'm looking down the barrell of a bloody big bill just thought I would cry to the forum first
Cheers, Muddymatt

You can change the engine without taking the body off, but its much easier to lift it off, for all the time it takes... Much easier access the everything
For longevity (sp?) best bet would be short block. IIRC, you cant get any bottom end parts sperately from LR... And if you are doing the work yourself, you wont have to worry about labour charges...My D3 Build Thread
you cannot get cranks for the TDV6 as Disco_Mikey says
if you need to go that way (as in crank cracked, which i doubt) then go for short block
LR010297
but at 95kg it's a big box to ship that far
and at the moment LR have no stock of them
i think you'd be best of doing some investigation work firstTLO has left the building.......

Thanks for the quick replies,
I will be getting a local landy specialist to do the work, he has had D3 and Sports apart before.
I just don't have the space or the balls to pull the body off myself.
Just out of interest what is the uk price on the short motor? 95kg shipping isnt too bad actually. I think air freight will be mega bucks but I don't mind waiting for the boat to arrive. It will give me more time to win Lotto!!
Cheers,
Matt

I would have thought that if the crank had cracked that you wouldn't have been able to continue to drive it any further.

Had my engine changed for exactly the same symptoms (under warranty). It was the crank, it wasn't broken, just wear on one of the journals (I'll post pics later). I was surprised by how little damage caused so much noise.
Just a thought - Ford Australia now use the TDV6, can you get a crank through them? A short block won't work due to oil pickup issues.Disco 5 HSE Lux

I think the early models had a problem with the cranks. The cranks were changed in MY08? They are the same as the 3.0L D4 engine.

No shuddering or vibes or any syptoms at all. Was driving and running perfectly one second -- the next it was clang clang clang. I did have the music up a bit tho..................
It's just gone down to my nearest good indy so we will see what he thinks.
Cheers,

They're not the same, 2.7 and 3.0 cranks still being made. They may have changed certain features to allow the two to be made side by side, but there is a difference.Disco 5 HSE Lux

My symptoms were exactly the same as yours, even down to the music
The shells start to pick-up, causing the damage seen. As it gets hotter bits start to break off, reach the oil pump which seizes, then the crank seizes and breaks. I think you'll find your crank isn't broken, just 'picked up'.

Ok discostu I bow to your greater knowledge and experience.
Is still true they upgraded the crank at some point? I note yours is an MY08.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Is it known what causes the problem - eg low oil pressure, no oil pressure, bearings not retained due to design or production fault?

It wasn't low oil pressure on mine, the pump was working fine (it was checked once stripped). I believe the cause is still unknown.

I wouldn't go that far, I just know 2 types of crank come off the line. I'll try and find out the difference/changes.Disco 5 HSE Lux

Just speculating here, but I think that the Ford 2.7L TDV6 to be used in the Territory in Oz is detuned to that for the D3.
Further, the 3.0L TDV6 is now produced with two different hp.
Is it possible that the detuning is, at least partly, accomplished using a different crank?
