TC - how long can it go on juddering

As above,

How long can these Torque Converters actually go on juddering (if it is the TC)?

Also what actually happens when it goes bang?

Can I prove its going to warranty company if it has not "failed"

Cheers

Which warranty co? Some will authorise if it's faulty/worn excessively, others want it to have gone bang and be in a thousand pieces. Thumbs Up

Technically, the bushings inside the TC have worn, due to the oil having been left too long without a change...

Without leaving it so long that it does go bang, you will struggle to justify to a warranty co. that it is in the early stages of failure...

A flush and a Dr Tranny would be the way to go, providing you have not left it too long, and the damage has already been done

Oh i have had the gearbox flushed by our site friend Geoff (very nice chap).....

I think its Hartwell (car plan warranty)..... I suspect they went to to go bang first.

I take it it would be catastrophic when it goes?

Cheers. Had mine done at 80k, will get it redone at 140k. So much for 150k. Rolling Eyes

LR state 150k/10 years.

ZF (who build the gearbox) say 75k/5 years. Sooner if doing a lot of towing/off roading

My tc never juddered ever.
Had the occasional feel of nearly stalling when manouvering.
I now know (after my 2.5k gearbox refurb) thAt the first signs of "left it too long before change of fluid "
Was the drastic drop mpg.
I assumed this was down to heavier foot, fbh use in winter months, map sensor, the list of easy 'fixes' goes on...
More clues as to gbox wear (didn't fail)
Buzzing under foot 1500rpm > 3000rpm
Slow to react gear changes at junctions, rounderbouts etc
Then came the harsh changes, and one in particular BanG into gear!
Bit of a rattle from underneath if in D
Now after VMTP's treatment..

Super smooth/quick changes
No shunts/ feeling of gearchange
Mpg is back up into the 30's
Tacho does not wonder about one bit
No more rattle from underneath

But one big thing I noticed is when it's turning over (starter) it is doing so, so much faster 👍

Maybe a megaflush 30ksooner for me (mine was At 90k ish) would of prevented
My box slowly self destructing,

Interesting post yogi972, I've been reading your other posts regarding your gearbox, and must say I have all the same symptoms that you have had, ie, low fuel consumption around 23mpg, harsh gear changes, tacho moving about depending on engine load and none load, I've also had the gearbox miss 4th gear on gear change and the revs shoot up, adding to this I've had clutch slip in 5th gear up hill and a gearbox fault that made the gearbox run purely on the touque converter with no full lockup.

I also booked the car into VMPT and they couldn't find any faults, they also changed the sump for a BMW sump which I must say now leaks from the bolts holes, so keep your eye on this, and they changed the fluid to ZF spec.
I think VMPT knew what was wrong with my box from my description I gave them, but didn't want to act without fault codes as none were stored.

I notice we are from the same area and would love to have a side by side comparison of gearboxes if at all possible.

Cheers

Lee
