An unusual question
If I go to the back country towing my camper, should I cover that large back window with bubble wrap (to stop stones) - and if I do, should I use masking tape to hold it on, or something else? maybe cut some perspex to size and glue on suction cups to the perspex and squeeze some foam in between maybe to stiffen things up a bit.
I think CW is right to go with something harder like perspex or even lexan. Bubble wrap might not be sufficent to stop a rock bouncing off the window.
There are manufacturers of these rear window protectors that I've seen in the 4bee mags (eg 4WD Monthly).

I've mentioned my own experience before. I towed a camper trailer that I borrowed and discovered too late that the stone deflector had partially failed which resulted in stone chips to the tail gate and glass.
The deflector consisted of mesh held onto a steel frame with plastic cable ties. The cable ties perished on the journey so that the mesh became loose. This resulted in stones hitting the tool box on the front of the trailer (but behind the deflector) and bouncing back into the tailgate. By the time I realised this most of the damage was done. It's only minor cosmetic damage but it could have been worse. Fixing the deflector seemed to make all the difference.
It doesn't help that the disco will happily cruise down a dirt track towing a camper at a reasonably high speed.

Hello Bob, a friend has a LC troopcarrier behind which he tows a camper, he had broken 2 rear windows with stone flick back, my offroad van has a frame with shade cloth on it to deflect the stones downwards done a couple of hundred km in dirt roads and no chips or damage to the rear of the D3 has occurred. my friend has since made a similar frame up and his rear window has so far stayed intact saying that I agree with the others that a perspex dbls the insurance.

A mate of mine has a D2 and TVan (with stone guards) - still broke a rear window. Admittedly it was an outback road with recent work done on it and we were going at a fair clip. From memory replacement was in the order of AU$700. I can't imagine the D3 window is less costly...
It is definitely worth taking some effort to avoid breaking a window outback while towing. G Day guys,
just for information, perspex is a bit brittle for what you are using it for (not as brittle as glass, i Know) If you get polycarbonate sheet instead, it is just like perspex but a lot tougher, 4mm should do.
for interest, 15mm of polycarbonate is bullet proof.CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

Unless the polycarbonate has been exposed to certain solvents or UV for a time in which caase it is NOT bullet proof.
Pbob you can get polycarbonate in Dubbo from R.Slapp & Co (richard) phone 68822778 .
He has a whole lot of it in thicknesses from 1mm to 10mm and 2.4 x 1.2 Metres sheets (or will cut to your measurements). You can get the glue (if required) right here in Mudgee from the glass shop on Sydney road!
I use it a lot for my R/C combat warships where we fire ball bearings at 50m/sec from CO2 powered cannon (need it to protect the internals)....come along 3rd Sunday of the month to Petersens Glenesk vinyard dam on Blacksprings road from 1000 to 1300.regards

Peter - I am regular reader of the R/C magazone, Airborne, and I digest with interest, articles on your water-based sport. In addition, to your ball-bearing firing battleships and I also read of model submarines that do submerge and travel under water. Next, challenge - make then fire torpedos to sink your model battleships or subs!!?

Well gents, I have been incommunicado for 3 days and have returned to find that to protect my rear window, I need to attach a model boat onto the rear of the car??
Seriously though, thanks for all the info regarding this and I will follow it up. I left on Tuesday morning in the D3 and drove to Kilkeven (Qld) - 1,020km and arrived at 7.00pm. Sorted out 600 head of cattle at a feedlot on the Wednesday and left the next morning at 4.30am and arrived back home at 3pm. The D3 went like a dream on its brand new Coopers - they had about 50km on them when I left. I had a co driver who is very impressed with the new wheels. One could not think of a better vehicle for trips like this.
