Has there been a change in the law? |
|
In 2011 when I bought my HSE I was told the rear air con was no longer an option due to some sort of Type approval regulation for road vehicles/weight etc. Even confirmed this with LR customer relations. Now I see it is back on the options list on the LR website. Bit annoyed- I used it quite a bit in my D3. Anyone know what happened?

I don't think the law has anything to do with it, although reductions in weight and emissions might have had a factor for JLR in the EU ...it was more about requirements in differing markets and the UK with it's temperate climate didn't really require it. Seems a customer outcry for it's return has won the day though 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

It was deleted when the D4 came in but has now been re-introduced for the MY14 D4 model. Not sure about a law change tbh.

I think got deleted as an option from the later D3's, I remember being off when I ordered the Red Pearl as they said I could not have rear AC, I'm sure the dealer said that it was a weight issue. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It was weight related. If you went for active rear diff or rear seat entertainment system it meant that the weight went above the type approval limit, as it was on the 2010MY you couldn't have active rear diff and RSE either only either or.

At the time the D4 came out it was not an option available in the UK, the info that was published by LR stated that it was due to weight on the rear axle and complying with the relevant laws in the UK over the weight on the axle. That was the hand out I received when I ordered both D4's MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

So whats changed weight wise for them to be able to put it back in I wonder ...I doubt that the regs have 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I suspect not a lot. Just it was perhaps just a bit too inconvenient to put on UK market vehicles at the time..

I would be annoyed too....
....the rear Climate Control system is a good feature that makes habitability workable is this huge vehicle.
I questioned what it went...one dealer principle told me it was LR marketing that did it due to some conflict with the rear entertainment system.
Personally...I would rate the need for rear CC far more than rear seat entertainment...which can be bought as an accessory & fitted to headrests.
It did have problems that must have cost LR lots in warranty...also customers keeping it operational...this was said to be pipe corrosion...which is ..my rear CC pipes were swapped out (over 600 quid)...I still have them they are totally un-corroded but was told by contract refrigeration guy at a dealers was due to leaky pipe joint seals.
Just to quell the comments by those who have D3's with rear CC & dont use it so have the comment it doesn't or didn't need to be fitted...please consider this who do use it & actually need it
One of the main reasons I didn't & still haven't "upgraded" to a D4 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

+1 for not going for the D4, I specced my D3 with rear e-diff, RSE and rear air con ( for the dogs ) was told I could not have this spec on a D4....... When asked would I like to 'Upgrade' to a D4 my answer was, "Why the hell would I want to spend more money on a vehicle with less spec ". The only upside was the engine I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

In answer to what changed on 2014 Model Year Discovery the MY14 Product Brief states:
Gross Vehicle Weight Changes Discovery at 14MY will see a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) increase. Constraints on GVW have previously proved restricting to the combination of certain feature content, one of the key areas being rear seat Climate Control. The latest changes will lift all of these constraints re-enabling the opportunity to select features without compromise. Specifically the GVW has been increased for highline SDV6 diesel derivatives from 3240kg to 3260 Kg. Note: the GVW for entry level GS trim remains at 3240kg
