How lucky?

Took my car into work yesterday to have a look at a couple of bits. Bonnet up on the ramp and could hear a very rhythmic tapping/knocking from front of engine. If the engine was revved then it seemed to change sides from the nearside bank to the offside bank and get quicker and louder. Still got extended warranty so gave them a ring, chap came out and had never heard anything like it and had no idea so got it recovered into my local dealer.

They have called today to say that the cambelt had started to break up and it was that that was hitting against the cover and making the noise. With the bonnet shut you couldn't hear it at all and it was booked in for 28th April for 105k service and belts and oil pump any way.

So, a very lucky escape I feel!

Land Rover Assist chap did recommend that I have my alternator replaced at the same time as the belts and was surprised that after 7 years and 67000 miles that it had not already failed. Thoughts? Or, if its not failed yet leave it well alone?

cheers

Personally while they have it, and are doing the belts, I would do the alternator, oil and water pump, and ask them to check the oil pump housing / casing for cracks as you are in the 07 range for failures of these.

Just my 2 penneth worth.

Already got oil pump booked for replacement, was going to leave the water pump as not driven by the cambelt I believe!?!

Easier to change the water pump whilst the timing belt cover is off Thumbs Up

It's a 5 minute job to swap over and the part is only about another £50. I'm having a new water pump fitted to mine next Friday when the belts get done. Thumbs Up

Took advice from LRA and from the garage and from reading on here it was always on my mind that it was probably on borrowed time. Driving to Czech Republic beginning of May so would kick myself if I didn't do that and it failed. Not worried about saving the money but easier once it is all apart.

cheers
