Also you have 30 minutes to decide that it is practically impossible to adjust the head lights to be Frenchy friendly and just not bother.......

I have done this three times but have 'manly' hands

it aint happening

I hadn't even thought of the lights flicking over Smile

Tunnel it is - the tin tent is 20mins down the M20 from us in storage near Sevenoaks/w.kingsdown so we may as well head down that evening, stay on site overnight then head off from there for an early tunnel crossing

No lorries are allowed on the roads in France on Sundays unless they have a special exemption for certain goods, so roads quieter as the others say Thumbs Up

Portsmouth-Caen Brittany ferries are expensive but are 1st class and create a break in the trip leaving you refreshed. Leaves you little driving to do, but if money is the issue it would have to be the tunnel.

I worked it out and there wasn't much in it price wise, once you'd then account of fuel TBH.

It's 500 hundred return with a cabin for the return journey from Poole to Cherbourg with the tin tent then another 70 miles to Caen. Calais to Caen plus the tunnel crossing is around 220 for tunnel plus 500 hundred mile round trip and around 75 quid for the tolls with the van on. So not a lot in it really.

Portsmouth -Caen 3 trips a year for us, Easter, summer, October Thumbs Up

Did tunnel and short hop ferries, but adding in fuel and hotels it's no saving over Brittany ferries, plus we are travel club members so get 20-30% off Thumbs Up

Not to mention the break and a little kip, we do house here to house in France door to door in one day so no extra hotels anymore Thumbs Up

I do regular school holiday trips from our home in Bath to our place near Sarlat in the Dordogne in a very comfortable 14 hours door to door via the Chunnel.

I use a Sanef toll thingy which is brilliant and useful when my wife is asleep! I highly recommend getting one.

Definitely tunnel. I do the trip to my house in Indre 8 times a year. 90 minutes quicker than the ferry. Sanef tag for tolls is great.

Dover to Calais ferry for me, its the start of the holiday. Although never taken a caravan I've never paid more than £20 to take the car across to load up. Thumbs Up

SWMBO is scared of tunnels - doesn't even like driving through the Tyne Tunnel - so I've had 13 years of ferry crossings (Portsmouth/Caen, Portsmouth/St Malo and Dover/Calais). Some have been good, some 'interesting' but all have been tedious. The fires in the Chunnel didn't help overcome her conviction that some disaster would befall us all if we dared enter it so it was the ferry every time for us.

But, at last, in year 14, I've finally managed to persuaded her that the tunnel is the way to go so we have a return journey booked in June/July for 3 of us + tintent. Really looking forward to the 35 minute journey time and getting to France an hour earlier than we would have normally. Just hope something doesn't happen on the outward journey or I'll never get her on the homeward crossing Laughing
Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills Smile
