New engine - how much is my Disco worth?
I recently had a new engine fitted as a result of the previous lump seizing up (managed to get LRCS to cover 50% of the cost; I still had to shell out 5k ) but think it is time to trade her in for a newer model. I have spoken to various people, most of whom have said they didn't think the new engine would have an impact on sale price. Can that be right? The car is an 07 HSE in very good condition, full LRSH, two owners with 147k on the clock but, as I say, a brand spanking new engine. Similar cars seem to vary between £10k and £13k online but I have no idea how a new engine should impact that. Any thoughts on what mine is worth would be greatly appreciated....

I had a similar situation with a D2 - new engine fitted (proper new engine not a recon) but it did not make a big difference to its value, which was a bit disappointing. I think it sold easier because of the new engine but did not actually increase its value.
Seems stupid I know!
ps - I noticed it is an 07 D3 - what caused the engine problem?2007 Base D3 - Buckingham Blue

I see a common issue raising its head here Farmerboy
Oil casing perhaps D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.
D4 rear upgrade - Narpys helped with that bit
Flack for problem solving and D4 Bluetooth Install/ D4 Heated Steering wheel with Flappy paddles n BBS enabling kit
Disco Mikeys work - Serviced, EGR blanking and 4x4 software upgrade, 3 flash indicators.

Must be getting to the stage for early D3s (incl mine) that the cost of a new engine is more than the car is worth and the car is scrapped.
Re engine changing/increase the value, doubt it. New engine raises the question of why it failed and raises concerns with the buyer, realistic or not.

you would have thought a new engine is a plus TBH ......
I would have leaned towards it if I had a choice of two similar vehicles .... but look at the mess I got in

The actual cause of the failure has never been determined, the engine just seized up and I had a choice of paying for 10+ hours of engine stripping to find the cause versus agreeing to paying 50% of a new engine.
So, given it has been replaced, I presume no residual worries? I am thinking of putting it in For Sale & Wanted, on the assumption that a member might be more likely to see a new engine as a plus

now was it a recon LR engine or a complete new engine, I assume it was a full engine and not a half engine?
Of course it would have the balance of the 12 months, unlimited warranty
looking forward to seeing the pics

Forgive my asking - how did you manage to get LR to stump up 50% on a 6 year old 147K mile engine?
It's a tough call as to the value - my gut feel is that on the one hand buyers will recognise that engines at that mileage are likely to have some wear and tear so a new engine is on the face of it reassuring. But at the same time, subliminally it will open up potentially unfounded doubts that they might be buying trouble.
I think you need to find the right buyer and this forum is a good place to start

Also why get shot of a disco 3 with brand new engine
Cost...what it takes to have it or get it...Razoos ...out of you're hard earned
Value.....something else entirely a feature (that costs) when its being sold to you...but worth all when the transaction is the other way
Worth.....the personal thing...perception based...some things are worth a lot to me & not to others depends on the day, what is happening, nostalgia, what it may cost to have, keep & actually use it, maybe the phases of the moon.
A vehicle (including a D3) has to have an engine....if its & burns oil the value of the vehicle is far less...
if its got a "new" engine.....it has the same value as any other as it doesn't do any more & costs the same to keep
...it doesn't make the vehicles worth any greater...it may even reduce it as it may be perceived the rest of the car has seen the life of the former presumably engine in some regime of not being cared for or thrashed (even both)
&....the truth that the former engine may have died an honourable death means nought.
almost.....the same as when you try to sell a vehicle with extra toys, bolt ons or goodies..the value from the book is the same..you get no more
.......however if a dealer is trying to sell you the vehicle (like ex demo cars) they try to sting you for the privilege of getting something that they haven't even paid for...basterds the lot of them
there is no point in listing an HSE's features when you try to flog it ....they are standard (or used to be) anyway - the car has a list value
so a D3 or anything else with a new engine value same as or maybe less...maybe worth more to you but not to anyone elseBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

value is the amount someone pays you for an item or service that is worth something to them and that's how much it costs themIllegitimi Non Carborundum
