HEATER / GLOW PLUGS

Hi everyone new here.
Have a friend with a 05 v6 Discovery hard start on cold mornings. HEATER PLUGS. Went to main dealer was told plugs might break in head so they might have to remove the heads and to do that lift the body and also get the heads skimmed costing € 2500.
Any advice or help much appreciated.

I had similar work, head off in situ, no body off. £3000 of work but this was at a main dealer under warranty. Specialist engineer had to do something similar to melting them out, there was a technical term but cannot remember it.

Thanks Dave.
I'm in the trade and no how much trouble heater plugs can be to remove them braking etc. But lifting the body to take the heads off think that's a bit much.

Yes, I was chuffed when the heads were removed without the body off just because of the lack of interference with my car and the slightly speedier job. Surprisingly, I had to pay for 3, as only 3 were inoperative. Still, £45 for 3 was cool for peace of mind. A side effect was also that it had all fluids, idlers and belts replaced of course upon refit - just prior to it requiring them anyway Thumbs Up

I am sure the same work would be a lot cheaper at an independent

I think they may have been referring to Spark Erroding, which I doubt there will be many companies doing this so often now, because the in situ drilling kits are becoming so reliable.

When I had mine done the LR Independent garage lifted the body off in order to remove the heads as "apparently" it is incredibly difficult/impossible to remove them with the body on.

My other indy also said that was how he would do it, but didn't have the capacity at the time.

Cost £2000ish all in.

With the correct tools they can all be done in situ, we have a local engineer that does D3s for £100 per snapped off glow plug.
