Is it worth paying the extra to buy a D4? |
|
I'm looking into buying a 2009 D3. Someone told me that it is better to get a D4 even if higher mileage because the engine and reliability is so much better. I could just about stretch to a high mileage D4 but am not sure the extra £7k or £8k is worth it. Any advice would be gratefully received!

Two totally different cars that you wouldn't believe that they use the same chassis.
D3 is a truck the D4 is a limousine.... Definately go for the d4 if you can afford it..

Thanks - if I stick to the 2.7 engine on a D4 the price is a bit more reasonable.

is blinged up to the hilt & in real terms you have to justify the extra dosh you are going to shell out....
all cars cost you dosh..some more dose than others
just decide if you want to spend more on trim, bling, some lack of practicality, less practical features .....maybe for vanities sake.
the D3 is a very practical, purposeful piece of kit.....if it's a "truck" it's a bloody good one
go for the D3 you feel most comfortable with...get some advice from local D3.....maybe D4 owners BREXIT - done properly.

Couldn't agree more - I'd buy a late D3 rather than an early D4 and save the money for the running costs (actually, that's just what I did!). I'd pay a bit more and buy from a main dealer so you can then put the max amount of LR Approved Warranty on the car that you are able to - I managed to get a 3-year Approved Warranty that will take me up to late 2015 on a 2009 model
Alternatively, and what we are probably going to do as a secodn vehicle for SWMBO rather than the A6 Allroad/XC70 we had planned, I'd buy a good, well maintained D3 in the 05-07 range off someone on the forum for £9-£14k and put the cash to one side - that way you'd be paying about half the price of a high mileage early D4 Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Mr Farrar you are very right.... The D3 is more practical, the dash is more utilitarian but has far better storage for bits and pieces ..... The D4 has a lovely dash but the design sadly lacks ....
I'm very fortunate that I've got both..... The D3 is the mud plugger and used for everything.. The D4 is the car for trips or nights out!
Both are utterly brilliant!

Thanks. Not really bothered about the trim but would be prepared to pay the extra for a D4 if that much more reliable.
I had a test drive yesterday - amazing car and can't wait to get one.

Same dilemma and I had a choice of a low mileage fully specced, last of the D3 HSE or a first run, base HSE spec D4.
There was a £6k difference. I went for the D3 and have not looked back. An early d4 is just a d3 in a new skirt so better to buy last of the d3 in my opinion and take another chunk out the depreciation curve to save for either d5 or if you don't like it last of the d4.5s
Love my d3, awesome car and fabulous support on here...the d4 is very car like and less purposeful... Make the choice carefully... I may well end up keeping the money I am saving and buy a sports car rather than do a d3 to d4+'upgrade MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

For me it's a complete no brainer. It has to be a D4. Having had both, the difference is vast. I'd also be concerned about D3 reliability issues. There's also LRs sad decision to stop supporting an aspect of the D3 in its refusal to produce updated discs. Its a legacy car. An isolated example, perhaps, but who knows.
The D4 drives so much better, is faster without having to faff around with remaps (done that too) and the 8 speed box is the best box I've ever driven. The interior is far nicer, also. The D3 will depreciate faster. The D4 is holding more of its value. You must get the 3.0 if getting a D4.
I'd suggest drive both, decide, then see what your money can get you. But if you can't stretch to a 3.0 D4, don't drive one!
And I don't get the comments about D3 practicality over the D4. That's just daft. Having had both off road, the D4 is far better given its greater power over an unmapped D3. It's just a better car all round. Yes, if you're concerned about the interior, the d3 is more agricultural, but that's nothing to do with practicality. If you don't want to get your car muddy, don't go off road, or buy seat covers. But the D4 is no less practical. PAGODA

Iv said it before, and I'll say it again. If you have to "just about" stretch your budget, then a D4 is not for you. You could easily be buying someone else's problem, always have a contingency budget for any repairs that will inevitably need resolved My D3 Build Thread

Definitely just as practical, what I meant by purposeful is I quite like the chunkiness of the D3 whereas the D4 is just so nice inside I'd almost feel awkward using it for everything and getting it dirt
Completely agree on the 3 litre comment, don't drive one unless you can afford it as definitely a step up in refinement although to me the 2.7 is still a smooth unit compared to a lot of diesels MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)
