Besides, those D4s are very "pretty" and "girly" on the outside with all those fairy lights... Ner Ner

Think you must mean the other way around?

no i think that statement to be quite true
the last of the d3s with low miles are a little overpriced right now and with a few miles added may well deprecate hard you can see how much by looking at 1 year older and 10-20 thousand more miles as a rough guide
but as more d4s become affordable d3s will probably drop faster

where as the bottom end of the d4 market will have a lot of people who can not quite afford 1 but want 1 and a small drop in price would see it snapped up keeping the bottom end of the d4 market quite boyant until the bottom of the market is saturated and that i think will be a while longer yet possibly when the d5 is released and there is a flood of trade ins

hope my rambling makes sense

The D3 never really appealed to me bit heavy and under powered. The D4 has bags more torque a little better on fuel which is irrelevant really on a car that averages 21 mpg. The D4 interior is much nicer especially with leather everywhere seemed a shame when I stepped out of 2ft deep mud and rolled around in the cab yesterday. If you want reliability dont touch a Landrover with a Barge pole especially a D3 or D4

The OPs initial and subsequent posts were regarding a (very) late D3 or an early high mileage D4 - ie one with the 2.7 litre/6 speed box combination. He doesn't seem to be contemplating the 3litre version from what he has said. Confused

I'm beginning to idly wonder when the new RRS will start coming through at sub £40k...... Embarassed
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

We're following a similar approach - looking for a D3 for SWMBO but have expanded net to RRS as they seem to be more lightly used (maybe not with right foot) and competitively priced Thumbs Up

Copared to what a D2...have you or do you tow ? Mine has oodles of power / torque even with a huge loaded trailer....I mean up to its nuts with a heavy load

If your D4 only does 21mpg I'm glad I didn't go for one....my D3 on around town journeys...(more than 10 miles less that 30...regularly over 25mpg///ona longer run well over 30mpg...unchipped driven hard

Thats the whole point Land rovers are a=essentially a utility working vehicle...not a hairdressers car...dont crib that you feel you shouldn't get in with muddy anything...A D3 is easy to clean & durable

....not been my experience with D1's, various D2's & a D3....may be I'm just lucky or is the myth just a myth..

Vehicles mean different things to different people. If I wanted utility I would have bought a series 3. I am sure the D3 was a great vehicle in 2003.
I have had lots of d1 s and a d2 which were fine. I avoided the d3 because it was unreliable and the d4 was supposed to address those problems but I have a feeling it is worst. My onboard computer is miles out on mpg. It cheerfully says at least 3 mpg more than the truck does.

If the vehicle continues to give problems it will be gone.

If you like the d3 trade it in you will love the d4 with 3 litre engine.

Yep! What Hotroacks said. Having had both side by side Like Farmer Chalk, I am lucky enough to have been able to do an extended side by comparison. The D 4 is the car the D3 should have been IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I loved my G4 and had a brilliant time in it. The D4 is more capable, more comfortable and drives better but then it is more expensive too. Whichever one you choose, you will not regret it Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the great advice Thumbs Up

I think I'm going to save up a bit longer and go for an early D4 with the 3.0 litre engine. I'm hoping that the repair bills won't be too much compared to D3. Also, I'm going to check out a Mercedes ML this afternoon. I prefer the D4 but my wife likes the ML.

You will be very disappointed with the ML. To bring it up to D4 spec for off road you will have to add lots of extras. The space inside is nowhere as good or usable compared to the D4. Ride and handling is nowhere as good either. Someone mentioned 'hairdressers' in a previous thread and that is exactly what the ML is for.....

Had D3 and D4 both great cars and both did as they say on the timne. However the D4 has been very very good, plenty of get up and go and plenty of grunt when towing. However the D4 as a whole has been more reliable, the first one I had did suffer with engine issues but it kept going. In my view either vehicle will be 1st rate but the D4 makes the D3 look very dated in all respects.
