Tailgate switch in a block of ice- how does the water get in

Couldn't open my tailgate this morning, took the cover off and there was a block of ice inside with the switch inside. Water out, and now drying. There are loads of threads on here about replacing corroded switches, but where does the water get in? Not presumably through the rubber seal, as that was keeping the water in. I am clearly going to have problems if switch constantly in a pool of water!

Had exactly the same issue last year - it does get in through the top of the seal. I made a very small hole in the bottom of the rubber with a syringe to allow any water which gets in to drain out, and have not had the problem since. Thumbs Up

when you buy a whole unit and replace it ..... there is a v thin rubber seal on the top edge ... I think thats where it fails .... when I replaced mine the foam inside was saturated Shocked

Replaced the unit and replaced the screws attaching it to the bodywork ... added a touch of sealant to be sure no water ingress ....

Fine since ... Thumbs Up

Video may be of interest........ it shows fitting... so any gaps across the top.... water will get in the unit Whistle

I couldn't get the rubber to fit again around the switch housing, I would need to have taken the whole thing apart to get it on - so currently a couple of dabs of superglue are holding my LR together! Will make a syringe hole as well.

I think that the replacement switches only come as part of a replacement handle ( Rolling Eyes ), which in turns only comes in grey ready for painting to match your colour ( Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ) which is why I bodged mine in situ.
