Trailer board connected, car brake lights staying on?.

I went out with the bike rack on yesterday morning and it was dark enough to have the sidelights on. The care felt odd from the get go and about 5km in to the journey threw all the transmission and suspension errors that led me to believe the brake light switch was faulty. However, it turns out that the particular combo of rack hooked up and car lights on keeps the car brake lights on at all times.
With the car lights off with the rack still connected, everything works fine!

All fuses are okay, is it perhaps a faulty switch but intermittent?

I'm struggling to see the logic of how the error is produced in order to solve it, has anyone had this happen before or know more about the wiring than me?

If everything works before you plug it in why not a faulty light board - do you have another you can swop with?

Beyond that you can test the towing socket with a DMM.

It probably is, but I'm struggling to see how turning the lights on would cause this behaviour?

Agree with Robbie - sounds possible that a fault with the side lights on the trailer board is the issue - especially if it has twin element bulbs (brake and side light)?

Easy step is to try another light board.
