I live almost 100 miles from the nearest motorway and yet have recorded the increase in economy posted earlier. I'd suggest it is more a case of driving style etc. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Recently swapped my beloved 57 110 TDCi XS for a Disco 3 'S' and haven't looked back.
Tax is now £200 a year cheaper (55 plate), don't have to empty the footwell every time it rains, wife is a lot happier and got nearly 35 mpg (according to the computer) on a motorway trip today (albeit at a restrained 60mph!) I'll always love the Defender and will look back on owning one with rose tinted glasses, excusing its faults and shortcomings as part of its character! I miss the Defender wave, but now make a point of looking out for Discos with forum stickers. I hope to have another Defender at a later date as a project car, but absolutely love the Disco. Plus with a baby on the way I feel a lot happier about using the Disco as a family car. One more thing the fold down part of the rear door flap and huge boot are awesome - makes life so much easier and have one very happy dog! 57 Defender 110 XS TDCi
