balance pipe- where? how?

I have been experiencing lack of power and a whooshing sound coming through the vents. I have done the following:

New turbo
Egr blanking
Cleaned map sensor
Decat
Checked all the pipes.

No fault codes and no difference.

I have read a few posts regarding split balance pipes which would cause lack of power and whooshing coming through vents, could this be the case?

If so how does one access it and can it be repaired?

You can see it through the drivers side wheelarch.

Apparently, it can be done with the gearbox in place, but it is a bloody awkward job Mad

Sooty deposits on the fuel filter and exhaust fumes is another give away !

Part I believe is only available from Land Rover.

Not sure where you are in Malawi, you don't see too many D3's !

Last time I was in Blantyre, thought the Land Rover agent had shut down.

I know someone who fixed it with some flexible exhaust hose. Cut out the hole and re weld new flexible pipe in. It was a ball ache, but working well. Thumbs Up

Gobeyond- I am in Blantyre. There are a few d3's here but because of any lack of knowledge most are not to be seen! What were you doing in this remote part of the world?

What I would like to know is there any way to find out without removing the balance pipe? there is no smoke from the exhaust.

Is the crossover pipe and balance pipe the same thing? Are the symptoms I have described typical of this including the loss of power?

Yes they are one and the same. The symptoms are similar too although the first one is usually a tick coming from the osr of the engine. Easiest way to diagnose is remove engine cover and listen whilst someone revs it. Usually you will see black soot on the heat wrapping around the exhaust if it's cracked. As Mike says, some people change them with the gearbox in but all the ones I have done have been manual and it's much easier with the gearbox out!!

I was with a mechanic and we examined the crossover pipe whilst we stood in a pit. There is no black soot around it and when we accelerate no smoke is seen. Could there still be a problem? It is a pain to take out and I wanted to be certain before doing so. Also we cannot get the gaskets here.

Sorry I forgot to ask are there any solutions I should try? All the pipes connected and related to the turbo seem fine and the system doesnt seem to have any leaks.
To put my predicament in perspective we have had 3 dealers in 3 years in the current one asked me to pick up the car as they are lost for ideas! Having spent over 7000 pounds on a new engine etc I am not best pleased,

I know this is a long shot, but have you checked that the air filter is clean and not clogged up. If it gets dirty it can lead to power loss, smoking etc. Not sure that it would cause the whooshing though. But for 10 mins undoing a few screws, would be worth checking. Especially if it has been driven in dusty conditions.
