Knackered Rear Diff : update to banging/shunting issue |
|
It's been a long, sorry tale of miscommunication, ramp failures, more details being required etc etc but the old girl has been under investigation/diagnosis sine the 19/12/13 (yes, last year).
Diagnosed as the rear diff as the oil was contaminated.
Warranty company asking exactly what was the source of the metal in the oil
2 weeks to rebook
me trying to be middle man between the transmission specialist and warranty company
the ramps breaking down and another delay to the booking
Unable to access diff internals
rebooked for a further week away
Ramp failure, more delay.
And today they call : after they have removed and stripped the diff as per warranty company instructions prior to engineer being sent to inspect.
So : it appears that the rear diff has massive wear on the gear teeth, gearbox specialist is scratching his head and saying how unusual it is as the wear is horrendous and the tempered layer has gone completely.
My questions :
Has this been heard of before,
Was there a recall
Should I be worried about the front diff
Should I contact LR customer care through the forum if this is a historical issue.
Is there such a thing as a reconned diff (this was previously mentioned as the preferred option by the warranty company
She's now clocked up 90k miles and is a 55 plate HSE, I'll try and get some pictures and hold onto the scrap bits.
any comments appreciated,
Hopefully fixed before I'm due a S.H.A.G session.

Originally, it started with a thump at low speed gear changes, easily repeatable when heading into slow moving traffic then pulling away again, an unnerving thump that I thought was gearbox related.
I've tried everything to get a quick fix, software updates, gearbox oil and pan replacement, gearbox full flush, ages underneath looking for dodgy bushes and stuff, diff and transfer box oil changes.
I could avoid the thump by driving carefully but it didn't seem right that I had to, read loads of threads some saying it was normal but to me it wasn't right.
Was always repeatable after about 10 miles of running when everything was warmed up, on hindsight I always suspected it was coming from the rear or middle of the car.
Plenty of threads on here about gear train backlash, thumping etc etc.
Hopefully this is the cause of my problem and hopefully it will help you in diagnosing yours..

Normally you would have a whine and would start to sound like a old bus.
Clunks rattles and bangs are normally not diff internal wear noises

From what I've heard from the transmission specialist, there is extreme wear and loads of backlash at the diff, they are quite amazed at the amount of wear and reckon that the hardened surface of the gears has failed , or been worn away.
I have read that there was a re-call or something regarding similar issues with diffs and wrongly assumed that someone on the forum might know something.
It sounds as though the diff wear is either normal or not the source of the thump when changing gears which worries me as the transmission specialist is adamant that this is the route cause of the issue.
I could be heading for a new rear diff for no reason ?

I'm sure they know what they are doing but the backlash is generally from taking up drive. Forward to reverse is where it would be felt mostly unless you have a manual transmission and you wasn't feathering in your next gear smoothly.

It's strange you feel the backlash with such a smooth changing auto box which the d3 has That's what I'm trying to say

I don't believe there was a recall on diffs.
It's documented on here that some diffs had their innards painted . Once filled with oil - and up to operating temperature - the oil mixed with the paint and created a nice grinding compound.
I don't know what LR did about this; The same as they did with the dodgy oil pumps, probably.

It was a service action. Remedial work was to drain, and refill the diff My D3 Build Thread

The rear diff has been replaced, apparently it was completely sh@gged internally with the gear profiles being in a complete mess.
Warranty company have stumped up to maximum claim limit of £1500, I was told that they had, and only would, authorise a new for old replacement which came to £1576.0 plus VAT.
Not so bad I thought, leaving me with £805 to cover the shortfall.
Bad news : I had hoped to get my mitts on it and was told it was mine to do with as I wished, went to pick it up and was told it was service exchange and the old one is now with LR : no photo's just a note at the end of the invoice : " excessive rear differential backlash, oil contaminated with metal filings, failure with sun wheel shaft "
If I had known it was service exchange I could have gotten one from Bristol for a tad under £800 !!
Good news : no thud or anything, tight as a drum, completely unable to recreate the fault.
so that was it : my gearbox thump, transmission slack or whatever was a knackered rear diff !!
