Replaced alternator, but now a little surging when cold |
|
Had a fail on the alternator on my 06 Disco 3.
AA landrover specialist diagnosed failed alternator as battery light on and car gradually shut down non essentials before gradually failing to proceed further.
Had a warranty and a non LR alternator unit was fitted (new one). I took it back to garage Bosch centre as when cold, radio went on/off, Satnav screen flicking on/off, lights and revs surging. They replaced alternator again but still does it from clap cold for about 20 seconds then absolutely fine and no further problem until perhaps next day when car stood overnight.
Any thoughts?[/u]

Was the battery replaced too? Chances are if you drove it untill it stopped that the alternator has damaged the battery. I would Get it tested ASAP

Same battery, got fully recharged and drop tested ( I think that what he called it) and he said it was ok.
He tried a new Bosch battery with same results.
Does seem to be getting better - I don't even get to the top of our road now and it's sorted itself whereas last week it took longer to settle down.

If they have fit a non Denso Alternator then you will still have problems all the time, the D3 is known not to like after market Alternators.

there is problems with lr alternators doing the same things as u describe can be a cracking noise through radio satnav flickers etc can also log a over voltage fault code in pbm i had 5 lr alternators till they fitted a brand new unit not a recon so i would get another one fitted. i tested mine with a volt meter first thing in the morning and the voltage was very unstable and once it settled down the cracking noise and sat nag faults stopped

Had the same problem with my06 a couple of weeks ago after an aftermarket alternator was fitted, ordered a Denso from advanced factors, Flack swapped the units over got a refund for the aftermarket one. All is okay now no issues.

Hi Ben
LR have problems with their own reconditioned units and have withdrawn them. The Denso shortage is caused by the sudden uptake in sales because of this, nothing to do with quality. Paul Redding
