In support of main dealer servicing, I've always taken our previous (5 Discos) to Hollindakes/Guy Salmon in Stockport and the service, in all senses of the word, has been great. We had warranty issues (gear boxes mainly) with the early Discos and a few other things that were all sorted very professionally and we were always left feeling that the dealer was doing the right thing for us.

We always check pricing with the other dealers in the area before servicing and Hollindrakes have always matched a lower price, if there was any difference.

The one time I took our last Disco II (5 years old by then) to our local independant, it cost me a fortune. I went there becasue the service was cheaper (although not by a huge amount) and we were well out of warranty, so thought I'd give it a try, but by the time they had done all the "extras" it was twice the price.

We also took it to the other local independant to diagnose an SRS warning light. After putting on their Autologic machine they announced it needed a new passenger air bag @ £800 + fitting. I took it to the main dealer and they looked at the same fault and stated that in their expereince these faults are oftern caused by a glitch in the seat belt pre-tensioning wiring and that they would clear the fault and monitor the issue. The fault never recurred and all was well when we sold the car 2 years later. All this they did for free, and save me the best part of £1000. Not sure if the approach by the independant was down to training or other factors.

If I look at the Total Cost of Ownership based on main dealer servicing, I'd have to say it has been a good experience.

cheers

simon

I have to say that only Ford have offered me a good service. BMW are good for nothing and VW are worse. Audi wanted to change brake pads and discs at 50% worn to save me a trip again in the next 30k miles at a cost of £750 on our A4! Vauxhall put the wrong oil filter on my astra which fell off on the motorway stranding me for 3 hours and a 2 hour trip home on the back of an AA truck, but they gave me the service £90 for free!
VW told us the reason out door kept droping is because it was a 3 door model and the doors were two heavy! The window sucked out at 80mph and then would not shut without a push from outside after stopping. They could not test it so could not fix it as they could not drive above 70mph. They told me the brake discs had warped after 10k miles on the same golf because we had a hot summer!
I took the discovery to Hereford LR in Jan and good price, but the seat heating pad problem and knocking steering was not fixed as they did not have the parts in. 3 months later I'm still waiting for a call!
I won't even tell you about BMW!!!!!! who take out a faulty cd player after removing the dash which is a 4 hour job only to find there was no replacement in the country. I waited 10 days for one from Germany and a further 2 days to refit the dash. 14 days just that time. Oh and that was the 4th time it had been in for the same problem and every time they said they had fixed it they had not.
I say give the guys a go. If they are crap don't use them again, you may find yourself a real good crew.

Are we talking main servicing here or ancillary work? I use an independent LR specialist in London for non-main servicing work (they did the pads all round including sensors for me this morning for £150 less than the local dealer quoted). They have been honest enough to recommend I use a dealer for main servicing work while the car is still under warranty (and it has always ended up needing something doing under warranty every time it has gone in), but I used them for my previous LR and found them streets ahead of the dealer in terms of technical ability and overall attitude so will probably use them again once this one comes off the warranty. They are also a lot cheaper.

I agree not all independents are the same and some will be good and others bad, but let's face it, the same goes for the dealers! Given personal recommendation counts for a lot, is it worth having a separate forum for feedback on independents alongside the current one for dealers?
