19" or 20" wheels on disco4

Hi all,

Currently looking at discos and like the look of the 20" wheels and apart from rubber cost are there any down sides?

Thanks

20" rubber isnt necessarily any more expensive than 19" rubber, so dont make that a factor

Larger wheels mean lower profile tyres which means slight harsher ride and more chance of kerbing the alloys.

Otherwise, its down to personal choice.

I've had many sets in 19" & 20" and to be honest there isn't much difference in ride comfort,as already mentioned slightly lower profile so kerbing about more likely however never personally had a problem with this either.

The only downside i've found is there isn't quite as much tyre choice available but now i've found the ultimate tyre" Cooper LTZ Zeon 275 45 50 i'm happy to stay on 20's, at least for the time being Whistle

I've got both at the moment, and as above, not a great deal of difference.....the ride is slightly compromised on the 20", but that could well be down to the lower profile road tyres I have on them,as opposed to the 19" with All-terrain tyres I have on the car currently......
I wouldn't let the difference in wheel size on the cars you're looking at sway you, there's not enough in it to affect a buying decision Thumbs Up

Whats the min load rating on a 245/45 /20 that you can legally run? Seems to be more choice at 110

I think you mean 275/45/20, and you wont get these load rated at anything higher than 110. You need to pick another size to get a higher load rating (265/50x20, 285/50x20, 295/45x20)

These go up to 114

for a D3, ideally you want to be at (or as close) as you can to the original 19" tyre spec, which is 111.

On a D4, then 109 is OK, as LR defined this as the 255/50x20 OEM tyre spec rating.

you can - they are not weight rated high enough (111 for D3) but if you want to do it, there's no law says you cant.

Are they likely to burst or something if they aren't 111 or above weight rating?

no they arent, but the theory goes that if you had an accident with under spec'd tyres on, would your insurer decline to pay out. Its a gamble most choose not to take.

also, 20"'s were never fitted by LR to the D3, only the D4, so you'd need to tell your insurer you were running non standard alloys and tyres anyway.

IIRC, at least one member here has suffered from punctures/damage when off-roading their Disco which was shod with the lower rated RRS spec. tyres.
