Help! EPB issue

Hi,

I am a fairly new owner of a manual tdv6 disco 3 55 plate and currently it is stuck in car park.

A short history..

6 weeks ago the near side rear calliper seizes, I take the car to an independent who then replace the calliper + rear disks and pads. Car comes back, everything is fine, EPB works without issue.

2 weeks ago a lorry swipes the front near side (his fault), car has a broken mirror and lost the plastic wheel arch, no other damage. Car drives fine, no issues with EPB.

1 week the car is taken to a body shop who replace the parts.

Today i go to pick it up, a body shop employee drives it out of the compound for me to inspect. 4 feet into his journey the EPB applies, car halts and will not move... I leave the car with them and take the hire car home.

I have had a call saying they need to "pull the leaver" to unlock it, and advise it is a £200 fix at a Indy.

I need to understand a little more about the EPB system.
Can I argue the body shop are at fault, the car was working when I left it with them.
Or is the Indy at fault? Should they have adjusted it after installing then new brakes?
Or can both say it was unrelated to their work and I put this down to the joys of owning a Disco?

Any advice gratefully received!

Mark

I had a parking brake which would not release (was at the local recycling centre !) . Tried everything I could think about and before activated the emergency release cable, I phoned a LR dealer. The service manager said that before the last resort of pulling the cable, lock the car and leave it to go to sleep - about 10 minutes, and then try again.

SWMBO and I spent 15 minutes wandering around the skip site getting strange looks until we went back to the car, unlocked it and hey presto, parking brake released normally and no further fault since.

Good luck.

This may be a daft statement but have you tried the set for service sequence in handbook to release it if the above does not work.

Hi,

I had to leave the car as I had another appointment to go to. I understand the body shop tried all they could before pulling the cable.

Now I am just trying to research what the actual effect of doing this procedure is. From what I have read it may just need re-adjusting? Or does some more serious work need to be done?

Mcbrun, difficult to say who's to blame interesting that the garage wanted £200,00 for the "fix", other than trying to explain complex workings of the epb is that you have a manual that is vunarable to clutch abuse so depending on how much the other parties have driven it and re-adjustment may have been required as a result of abuse? Again difficult to say what caused the epb freezing...It's worth reading this on driving a manual version to avoid exesive clutch ware:

Hi,

An update on this. The car was taken to a specialist who diagnosed it as a wiring fault, he made a local repair in the N/S/F wheel arch, but that did not work. I am now told the whole wiring loom needs replacing at a cost of £1900... The insurance company inspected the car and they conclude it is not in anyway caused by the accident or the repair for 4 reasons:
1, The accident repairers would not have gone anywhere near the connectors when replacing the wheel arch
2, The connectors are corroded,
3, A local repair was made using non approved insulation.
4, There is no evidence of a cut.

My only hope is the specialist can provide me the old loom and show me the cut.

Gutted does not even come to describe how we feel about this. Sad

It would need to be major damage to the wiring loom to warrant a new one.

I assume we are talking about the chassis loom, which is body off IIRC.

Where in the country are you? Bound to be a site sponsor, or someone neaeby who can have a look at it for you Thumbs Up

Hi all,

Some progress has been made. I have received a phone call from the specialist, they say the new wiring loom is in and everything functions.
They have however advised that the handbrake motor is working very slowly and runs rather hot. This, they say may be the reason why the wiring loom burnt out. They advise replacing the whole motor, part cost is £475...

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do? Is it worth replacing it or can it simply be cleaned.

Any help will be gratefully received!

whilst it may be not what you want to hear, anything that is showing signs of failure on a D3 is worth changing rather than finding the vehicle lets you and your family down when needed.....of course that does not mean a) you have to use it (assuming yours is an auto and b) pm Geoff who has the ability and kit to do it for no doubt less dosh Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply Character,

The car is a manual, so I had always factored in paying for a new EPB and a clutch at some point during the 3 years we intend to own it. Sounds like this is the time!

Is Geoff's username simply geoff ?
