Ok, the one that is round and impinges on the grill is the high beam headlamp, the big bright ones that come on when you push the stalk forward or pull it back to flash. Is this the one you mean?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Hi Robbie,
OK, my mistake, it then must be the high-beam. It wasn't bright but In my defence it was bright daylight when it was on
Just to confirm, it's only the right side, not the left.
Cheers

Ok, well the high beams are independent of each other via separate FETs in the CJB. If it is brightly lit it could be a CJB problem, perhaps triggered by your wider issues. If it is dim it could be a wiring or headlight issue; faults such as this have been known to play havoc with comms and may have triggered your problems when flashing.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Aaah! ok.
It was dimly lit. A guy who works with me actually pointed it out to me by mentioning "your parking light is still on"
so... next step, trace the wiring and test the headlamp?

Well yes but whilst I do not wish to give you any false hope (!) I would actually be rather tempted to hook-up the power, disconnect the headlight, follow the previous guidance and try to flash again - you never know you may be incredibly lucky.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

About trying to reflash a faulty (flash) ECU....
I've done some tests today on a guinea pig ECU and when the ECU flash array is faulty, the ECU's secondary bootloader (SBL) is supplying you with a pretty specific error code which characterize exactly the problem's nature...
It responds with a 0x72 error response code which means (according to ISO14229):
0x72 generalProgrammingFailure
This response code indicates that the server detected an error when erasing or programming a memory location in the permanent memory device (e.g. Flash Memory).
It would be interesting which error code is supplying you the apparently damaged ECU...
@oceandriven
If, in the end, you will change your BCM with a new one and all will be OK, are you interested in sending me the faulty one for study? I will pay any expenses. Thanks!

OK. Life and work kept me busy this week and the vehicle is back on charge, getting ready for another flash attempt. I've disconnected the headlamps and let's see what happens...!
Alex: Yes, by all means you may have the broken BCU if unrecoverable. I do have another ECU on order which should arrive in the next two weeks.
How would I be able to retrieve the error code?

Thank you!
Unfortunately you wont be able to retrieve that error code as you can't access, with what you have, the CAN bus to monitor the communication. That error code is appearing at the diagnostic tool - car level.

I have a working D3!!!
I have a fully working Discovery 3!!!! My heavy garden ornament is now back on the road..!
AND.... utilising the existing BCU/CJB - It seems it wasn't completely dead.
I got the battery fully charged and upto normal level which took a while...!
Disconnected the headlight which had been stuck on.
Plugged the battery back in the vehicle.
Tried a reflash... same zero outcome.
As I still have atleast 2 weeks to the delivery of my new BCU/CJB, I had time to play and fiddle.... And what further harm could I do?
Someone mentioned a dealer tool might be able to unlock the ECU but I don't have access to a Dealer tool(T4?) and would have to tow the vehicle 50km to the nearest dealer... however I did manage to grab an IIDTool on the off-chance that it may work. When do you have too many diagnostic tools?
I went through the similar flashing procedure as detailed in the handbook. Still same outcome.
I then got hold of Gap-Diagnostics who were very surprised I had bricked my ECU and started to ask some questions and make some suggestions of what to check. After a good few hours of checking wiring and fuses all over the vehicle, the guru's at Gap sent me some instructions on how to flash the unit with the vehicle basically "off".... and it worked!!!! and somehow the solution came back to Fuse 16!! First flash failed with fuse 16 inserted but as soon as I removed 16, the ECU seemed to accept the flash and the vehicle came alive!
All I can surmise is that the ECU was unable to reflash with power going through the board. Once there was no load on it, it seemed to work.
Now all I need to do is cancel my BCU order with LR.
A big up for all the help I've received on this forum and to everyone who has provided suggestions and a big up to the Gap-Diagnostics team who somehow managed to rescue my poor dead BCU
Now, IF (and this is a very hypothetical IF...), I were to try flashing the BCU again but had my CTEK 25 attached this time, would the BCU Flash ok this time or do I have a BCU that draws too much power and needs to basically be off to flash?... I'm too scared to check..

Glad you got it going in the end, i would also have doubted it was totally dead and just needed to be programed in a certian way to revive it again.
You may be to late to cancel your order with LR as it may already be in build, if it is then you cant loose anything by trying to program the one you have already. may be start by programming it with fuse 16 removed then move forward to having the fuse back in.
Regards Pete

Good for you!
As for the reflash, now you have experience!
Go ahead and experiment!
As my grandpa used to say, every kick in the butt is one step forward...
