Cruise Control

On return from a long trip 'Up North' on return leg Cruise Control gave out half way home. Stopped for fuel (surprise surprise), restart etc still no cruise control. Been trying to active it whilst driving for the last week. Then, sure enough, yesterday it started to work again.

Does this suggest it is more likely the switch pack, wiring in the steering wheel or something else?

Cheers

You have 2 out of the 5, the clockspring (rotary coupler) and corroded wiring at the ECM and iffy brake switch are the others.

I'd inspect the ribbon wiring/connector behind the airbag as the starter-for-ten.

Before I do, is there a knack to getting the airbag back in place so as not to trap any wires etc?

There are clips under the airbag for the wires. When you unlatch the 'bag tilt it up and away from you and the wires usually stay in the correct clips. No drama if they don't.

Yep, my money is also on the little wiring loom behind the airbag. Wink
I've had to fix mine twice for the same reason, wire snapped off at the plastic multiplug.
I attached slightly long wires and it's been fine since.
Also, you can actually do this repair without unplugging the airbag but do obviously need to release the attachments so you can get in behind it. Wink

I didn't, you still have to release the airbag but you don't have to disconnect it.
It is possible to leave the airbag plugged up yet swing it up and out of the way so you can get in behind it to attack the problem some looms. Wink

You're obviously going to require an airbag removal tool too.

If cruise is the feature that is causing you grief Wilf, check the brown wire at the right hand side of the multiplug beneath the airbag. Being on the end it seems to take more punishment and was the cause of intermittent cruise on my D3. Wink

I have used an old brick tie (pence at the builders merchant or free all over the place thanks to my messy builders). It is slightly stiffer than the coat hanger. The ideal shape is a 90 degree hook of only 3-4 mm. It takes a bit of fiddling the first time (read that as hours!), but once you know where the clips are it comes off in seconds.

To your post, my clock spring was replaced in 2010 by me, solved cruise control and telephone control problems. The new one just stopped working and before buying a new one I gave it a vacuum (dust removal) and a good spray with wd40. Now all the steering wheel functions work again.

If you need a new clock spring, it was best value with "the large one".
