after many years of admiring the d3 I am now in a position to purchase one woo hoo
I am looking for buying advice from fellow members on this site as to what to look out for when viewing a vehicle.
prefer manual box, but which would you say is the better choice.

Do a search on buying advice - there is a huge wealth of info on here already.
Also look and see if there are any well cared for D3s for sale - buying one from a forum member is often a good plan

You haven't indicated what the budget is and whether or not you are mechanically minded, but I'd set aside a proportion of the budget for preventative maintenance.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics

What to look out for:
For starters, have a peek underneath. Chassis should be black, at most with some small brown (rust) spots. Any major rust or more rust than black and you should look elsewhere
Play with EVERYTHING. High/Low range switch, air suspension height switch up/down, HDC, terrain response, the radio, handbrake, the aircon (and check that you get cold and hot air as required from ALL vents), cruise control (if fitted, you need to be driving at 20mph or more to engage it), the steering wheel radio controls (if fitted), the wipers, windscreen washers, lights, heated seats (if fitted), side mirror adjustment joystick, all electric windows, rear tailgate... everything.
Take the car for a drive. Listen for knocking when going over rough ground, or when braking sharply. This will mean the wishbone bushes and/or ARB bushes need replacing. If the steering wheel seems to knock over rough ground, it means the inner track rod ends are probably past their best. Give it a good few "pedal-to-the-metal" runs on a straight road. Check for excessive smoke in the mirrors.
That's all I can think of at the moment
Manual/Automatic. I have a manual but drove a couple of automatics. Both are nice to drive. Both have their pros and cons. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. You can't go wrong with either. But the auto box on the D3 is very very nice to drive.Dennis

I know my way around the tool box and not afraid to tackle majority of repair work as spent some time working for coach company.
Budget is looking to be around 13k max
I like the enjoyment of changing gears always have that's why I am favouring a manual box, and not had much experience driving and auto, altho manuals seems a lot harder to find on the d3

I have done 40+k in my 05 manual and it's a pleasure to drive - manual all the way although i dare say the auto box is a delight if you prefer to be less involved

With the price of new auto boxes and the amount off work, I went for a manual, had 2 FFRR both with autobox issues, one a4k repair bill, other at 49k mileage done by LR .
Not impressed and with the weight of this car it gets pummeled!!!FFRR SC 4.2
