Rattling on Steering wheel, advice required! |
|
Evening all, I have owned my Discovery 3 2007 SE for around 3 months, love the car which I bought from a dealer but have had a few problems since I picked it up, mostly down to the dealer not carrying out agreed work at point of sale. The issue I have at present is the steering wheel seems to feel as if there is a rattle / knocking feel when going over bumps, it can almost be described as the steering column feeling loose, it doesn't happen all the time and is not noticeable on normal urban driving. I drove along a cobbled lane today and it was quite noticeable.
Having lost all faith in the dealer I bought the car from, I had an independant health check carried out a a local dealer, they advised that there was play in both inner rack steering arms. The original dealer has since had the car back and assured me this has now been cured, but I am not so sure! I was also asked at the dealer if it was my first disco (it is) and was told that Discovery's drive very different to other cars due to the air suspension, but the feeling I get through the wheel doesn't seem right to me.
Could anyone advise if the fault I am experiencing sounds like a steering rack issue? Also is there any way by looking under the car myself if I could tell if the inner rack arms have been replaced / worked on recently? Thanks in advance for any advice.

May well not be the rack - in fact plenty of places to look before the rack.
ARB's (Anti-roll bar bushes) Easy enough to DIY
Steering column Universal Joint - DIY able,
Wishbone Bushes. - Can be done yourself, but need the right tools. Mark.

If new inner rack arms have been fitted, they should have really done the lower ball joints at the same time.
If you've not had new lower front wishbones done then might be worth considering getting those done as well as they come with the lower ball joint pre-loaded.
The rattling you are experiencing could also be caused by the lower steering column.

Thanks for the advice, I am definately going to look myself prior to going back to the dealer, sounds like a good place to start.

Sounds just like the Lower Steering Colum to me, as I had exactly the same symptoms on my car after the lower arms were fitted.
Not too expensive if you buy the parts from The Large One and follow the 'how to' on here. Club Narpy Torch
