Painted the Trim on my LR3

Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum. I am active on a few other forums but this one is pretty awesome!!

I had thought about color coding the trim and flares on my LR3 to the same code as the body. (Java Black) just like the LR4. The cost factor was a bit steep. My main reason for painting them was because I was tired of having to keep using products on the exterior plastics to keep them looking new. After a few washes or rain, the plastic would start streaking and looking like crap again.

I decided to try Dupli-Color's "Trim Paint" which is a dark Satin Black Spray Paint that can be waxed, is permanent and can be clear coated for even more gloss. Dupli_color also makes the spray Clear Coat. The hardest part of the whole process was thoroughly cleaning all the pieces after I removed them from the car. It's important to remove all traces of treatments, wax, etc. from the plastic. I used liquid Dawn Detergent with a Scotch Brite pad as well as a sponge. I rubbed them down with rubbing alcohol and scuffed them up with 320 grit sand paper. The paint applies easily, and dries quickly. I did 3 light coats then 2 heavier coats. It dries to the touch in one hour but i opted to let them dry overnight before installing them back on the car.

All the trim is now a Dark Satin Black. I finished everything 3 days ago and tomorrow it's supposed to rain. I am hoping that it retains it's look and I will never need to apply any more plastic shine products to them again..

I apologize for the iphone photos..

One Year Update

The Duplicolor Trim Paint looks great for the first few washes. It begins to fade and flake off off after a few months. It is impossible to touch up any chips. After 2 months, a couple spots flaked off and I tried to touch it up by sanding the area, masking around it and shooting a couple coats over it. After removing the masking, the new touched up area looks nice and Black. Just like it did when I first painted it. The surrounding area is much duller and is so obvious that it was touched up. This is only after a few months !!!

The product does not withstand the test of time.
If you want a lasting durable original looking finish on your black Trim, Don't waste your money and tremendous amount of time using Duplicolor Trim Paint !!
