breakdown
hi , new to this forum and wondering if there is any help out there to the problems that i,m having with my 2005 discovery 3 , the main problem is that it has broken down a couple of times now when driving on a motorway or dual carriageway so this happens driving approx. 70mph , the breakdown is not the main issue it is what happens when it does this is my main concern , the engine has total loss of power , not even limp mode , so i to have to literally freewheel as safely as possible to hard shoulder or side of the road , this can be quite dangerous if i,m in the outside lane , as im in the middle of this there are numerous warning lights going off , last time it was hdc fault , engine system fault , park brake fault etc , while waiting for the aa to take me home the engine would start then cut out with same warning lights after 15 seconds , an hour and a half later just as the aa arrived i started the engine for the umpteenth time and everything was back to normal with no warning lights whatsoever and was able to drive home , i have used a diagnostic machine on the car and the numerous fault codes in its memory all relate to loss of communication with various modules , are there any owners out there who have similar problems , thanks

Brake bulb or brake pedal switch.
At least it is a cheap fix, even if it did scare the crap out of you.

I have exact same problem as cassie4tilly.
Disco 3 '97 tdi se
Total loss of power on motorway, all lights and pings.
After 2mins or 12 hours will reset.
Independent LR have changed fuel sensor, brake switch bulbs, faults cleared, then happens again.
Faults cleared and ok for a few days and same again.
Has anyone isolated a common resolution for this? it seems reading threads that this could be absolutely anything and everything!!!

Thanks for replies, the Brake Switch was the first thing I had changed, so this has already been ruled out.
The car drives perfect for a couple of days then total drive failure with pings and lights. Always in the most dangerous driving situation, it is obviously an electrical issue as if it was a major componant the car would just not reset and be able to drive normally again. its a good job Land Rover don't make aeroplanes, they would be dropping from the sky like bricks!
The difficulty seems to be that when the initial fault reoccurs subsequent fault codes are then triggered like falling dominoes making it difficult to isolate the initial problem. Bad design, Poor Engineering!!
The car is out of warranty and bills mounting. Reading the forums, this problem is of epidemic proportions in the Disco 3 community. Have there not been any LR recalls to correct this FOC?
Thanks, Steve

When you changed the brake switch, are you sure you didn't catch the brake pedal and lift it a little? If so, it makes the brake override the throttle at too sensitive a setting. LRA guy says simply re fitting it will recalibrate it but that's on a D4. Not sure it's the same on the D3 but must be worth a chat with the dealer/technical support surely?My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

Thanks, Steve
I did replace the switch myself and was careful not to move the pedal during this procedure, however I suppose I may have done so without realising. The car is currently in the Independent LR specialists I will call them and suggest this. The last few times the car shut down however, was not under braking but while driving at a steady constant speed on a flat level motorway.

Ok mate, please lets us know on here when the fault gets diagnosed. I know the brake switch can be a PITA when it comes to this kind of fault. FWIW the symptoms you describe are identical to our experience. Hope you get it sorted soon My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

hi , just a few updates for yous , (stickerguy) mine was exactly the same thing ,driving at a constant speed on the motorway , I have literally changed the brake pedal switch in the last couple of days and used it this morning to go to work , I got as far as 300metres before lots of warning lights and messages came on , managed to get to work after stopping and restarting a couple of times , I changed the switch myself and did move the brake pedal so going to reinstall in again without doing this , when it happened this morning it was actually braking of its own freewill after the warning lights came on , saying this nearly all the time the first light to come on is the hdc fault which obviously is connected to the brakes , ive also done a hard reset on the car and this cleared all the history of previous faults of which there was a lot , i used a jlr mongoose cable to access the cars computer and over the last few thousand miles there has been umpteen times when there has been (lost communication ) with various modules , it normally triggers about 7-8 faults each time , hope this helps , going to refit the brake switch in the next couple of days and will post the outcome , thanks for your responses
