possible broken con rod?
Disco broke down last week. Heard a strange rattle for about 3 seconds and then loss of brakes, power steering and came to stop. The starter would not even turn. AA recovered me from a very busy A75 in the dark.
My local garage has checked timing belt that was changed about 3000 miles ago. Its ok.
With out looking any further into the problem he reckons its a broken con rod. He tried to turn the engine over manually but it wouldn't.
now they are closed for xmas.
Any ideas? Will I be cheaper with a 2nd hand engine?
Cheers

Unfortunately, not an isolated incident, but more commonly associated with 08MY engines...
Another possibility is it has spun a main/big end bearing.
A 2nd hand engine can be had from 2.5k up to 4.5k, depending where you source it from. New/recon engines from LR are around 6.5k + VAT, IIRC
Then labour to fit ontop of that. Also, if you are in such a position, there are other bits and pieces that are advised should the body ever be off. Brake pipes for instance

Cheers Mike,
I did a part finder search and been offered engines ranging from £1000 to £4500.
I have to see what they find and get a quote for repair.
If I get a 2nd engine I feel I may be just gambling with more hassle but I suppose its just luck.
mine has only 76k miles on it.
I will know more next week hopefully but dreading it.
