Relocation UK to Charlotte, NC

Hi Guys

Does anyone on here live near Charlotte, NC Question

I am probably relocating my family from the UK to Charlotte this summer for a couple of years
and it would be good to know if there are any local LR guys there.

I will be leaving the D3 in storage for a couple of years Big Cry but would love to be able
to hit some trials in the area while we are living there Very Happy

Andy

I'm not NC, we're a fair bit further east in UT, but if you are anything like us give it a couple of years and you'll not want to go back.

Good luck with the move! Thumbs Up

Hi

I always love to see your posts with the 110 on the beach!!

Here is my D3 on a beach probably about 10,000miles from your 110!

How long have you been living in the US for and have you settled permanently there?

We have 2 young boys 6 and 2 so it all depends on how the elder fits into life and school over there Big Cry

Thanks for the good wishes Thumbs Up

10000 miles is probably right - that was in Oz. We lived there for a couple of years before moving here. Looks a bit chillier in your picture Laughing

We've been in the US for not far off 4 and a half years now - It is a permanent move for us, we have green cards and will apply for citizenship when we are able (just over a year).

I reckon you are moving them at a perfect age - they'll soon settle in. My girls are now 15 & 12 - moving here was a bit tougher for them, but they love it now.

Standard of living here is, in my opinion, much higher. No regrets from me.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions as you go along.

Cheers!

Charlotte is a neat town, I am about 6 hours north in VA, but I get down to Charlotte a few times a year for work. There is a lot to do, pretty good job market, and quite a bit of diversity for a mid-size city.

I'm about 1.5 hours south of Charlotte in Greenville, SC.

Dcwilliams29id is right...Charlotte is a great City. We go there often for events, shopping or just fun for a weekend get away. Lotsa money in that City, so you're likely to find more blingy LR owners than 'get em good and dirty on the trails' type of owners.

That being said, Charlotte is only 2 hours from Asheville, NC. The LR dealership there is top notch...I bought my original LR3 from them and they were fantastic. They do offroad events regularly for owners with a great turnout every time. Also, Asheville is home to the Biltmore Land Rover experience school which I've done a few times. Go for the course, stay for a tour of the Biltmore House...nothing short of amazing.

May not be all that helpful with Charlotte details, but feel free to PM me for insights to the surrounding areas and I'll help where I can.

Welcome to the South!

Greenville is worth a visit as well if your going to be in Charlotte. Really cool town, a few fantastic restaurants - the lazy goat, sobys, high cotton, and others. It's a nice weekend getaway trip. A real gem in the south.

How do you people just get to "I want to live in the US" and go? I'd love to live in the US but even though I'm an engineer and the wife a nurse/research manager the US would rather have someone from some obscure ex Soviet Block state...............

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the replies - still in the UK but we now have the work visas and school
sorted out for my son.

We are moving because the company I work for is being purchased by an american company
so it was basically either move or look for a new job.

Should move over in the New Year - sad to have to sell my D3

I was very impressed with Charlotte on our recent family visit - very green and pleasant city -
not too big but lots to do.

Only 6 hrs drive to Orlando so I can forget about the trip to Disney Paris!!

Nice one - keep us posted as things develop. And if you hit any roadblocks and need advice drop me a line - we may allegedly speak the same language as the yanks but we were scratching our heads on how things work here a few times when we arrived.
Thumbs Up

Numpty - I worked for a US company in Australia & they offered me a role here - the winner was they paid for green cards etc. I know two brits within 10 miles of me who moved over through jobs with Rio Tinto

Best advice I can give is look for a big player in the field you work in who is headquartered in the US (or has a big presence here) and take it from there.

I too would love to relocate to the US.

I've looked into it, and you either need to work for a US firm in the UK and transfer over, or apply directly for US jobs.

The problem with the later is, and excuse the incorrect wording, need to be 'better than anyone locally' in order to secure the role.

That means you need to do something pretty specialised, and be a decent way up the ladder in your field.

I've applied for a couple of roles, and one did come back to me saying 'if you were already in the US, we'd be interviewing you, but its going to be impossible to prove to get you sponsorship'

Massively frustrating Sad
