Removeable tow bars.

Just a reminder not to leave your tow bar on over winter if you are not using it.
see earlier posts on this subject. They seize and the key snaps in the lock. meaning a new lock set and a whole lot of grief. Thumbs Up

I had mine on last winter, the lock never seized, but I think the innards of the hitch itself have seized instead.

So, now I basically have an expensive door stop..

Not sure if any lubrication would have helped, but it wouldn't have hurt.

If the tow bar is off the vehicle it is an easy fix to get the locking lug moving again. either remove the locking mechanism and stip down the whole thing and clean and regrease. alternativley tap in the locking lug using a hammer and block of wood and spray lubricant around the lug, don't forget to unlock and pull out green cap first. work the lug up and down remove the rusty gunge that omits around the lug each time the lug is exposed. after 5 mins of this the lug should start poping out clean.

I then warm up some motorcycle chain lube in hot water and spray around and in the lug hole. This oil, when cool, will solidify and cling to the working parts and prevent the water and crud from entering again.

I hope this helps. let me know how you get on.

It doesn't necessarily take a whole winter, in the space of two weeks mine went from removable to fixed.

At least that avoids the potential to lose it, another one of those thingS I will need to get round to.

First thing to do is buy a new lock set, I think L/R know they dropped a goolly with the design because it is really cheap at about £15.

When you see how the new one works you will be able to figure out how to remove your tow bar without the key working. I cannot tell you how to do it on here for obvious reasons!

See my previous threads on this subject. It really is a doddle when you know how.

I have a plan which involves an assistant, a long bar and a hammer. I'll look it up though.

Does the removal destroy the old lock?

This job is likely to be on the backburner for a while, I envisage doing a fair bit of towing over the coming months. It would be nice to be able to put it away but it's not the end of the world.

tow bar

You do not have to destroy your original lock. but it has probably seen better days and would be worth replacing if the mechanism is seized. they normaly break when you try to force them anyway.

If your old lock is working and you really don't want to give the stealer £15 of your hard earnt phone me and I will tell you the soloution.

Phone No now removed ***** ******
