FBH diagnostic and remote timer install finished!!!

Though I would post this for anyone interested.

I read the many threads on here for both connecting up to thermotest and timer install.

I wanted to do an install that would cover both but not at the same time of course so I ordered a timer, remote unit, 6 amp 3 core cable, inline fuse holder, a male obd2, a female obd2 and a blue odb2 to usb cable to connect to the computer.

All in came to about £100. (Until I blew up the timer but will get to that!!!)

I wanted to install all the bits in the waterproof box on the drivers side so first off, I ran a 3 core cable across the engine bay and into the battery box. From here I connected to battery + , chassis ground and soldered to the red cable to pin 2 on the fbh.

The cable is sitting in a groove on the underside of the plastic trim held in with cable ties.

Once in the drivers side water proof box, I took + and - to a terminal box. This was so I could power the remote unit later.

I mounted a male obd2 port and ran power from the terminal block to it plus the 3rd wire from the cable which is now wbus connection. Ve+ to pin 16, ve - to pin 5 and wbus to pin 7.

This will now work for diagnostics with thermotest and blue obd2 usb connector.

I then made up a lead using the timer lead supplied on the forum to a female obd2 port connecting to the same pins. With that plugged in the timer works SmileSmileSmile I can now swap between the 2 when ever needed.

I added a single channel rf remote as per the first class forum guide in the wiki and that's it. (Well I sort of did except I put 12 volt down the button leads and blew the timer......idiot)

Needs a little finishing but looks quite tidy I think

I have decided, I will not be using a remote with mine. Too many have been killed with soldering irons Shocked

Going to disconnect it from the CAN BUS, and press the "fire" button half an hour before I leave Thumbs Up

If you fancy a trip to the rock I'd be happy to Thumbs Up

I think soldering onto the timer is the tricky bit. After knackering the first timer I got an electronics firm to do it. Took all of 10 minutes and they said it was easy!!!!

Use a temperature controlled iron and the soldering is nothing to worry about. Thumbs Up

Did mine, mounted the timer on the box holding a gsm remote control and fitted the whole lot in the lower glove box.

The smug feeling of setting it off at work 30mins before leaving.... Oh the joys Laughing
The looks when I'm just ringing my Disco to turn the heating on Whistle

Dm, depending on qty I could solder a few for you.
Call it payback for the heaps of advice gleaned from your posts. Thumbs Up

The soldering was the easy part -- agreed that a decent temperature controlled soldering iron makes a difference. Unfortunately my Wella iron broke after years of abuse, but I have one of these:

and it's perfectly adequate. With the current sale, £40 is a damned good price.
