Thanks gents. My thoughts are the tow at protects my rear bumper. Unless it is going to get me wedged.
Happy valley sounds interesting.
What about b d lane? It looks tough on YouTube.D3 HSE TDV6 Auto. Bonatti Grey.

Two ways to look at that. Yes it will protect the rear bumper but it also acts as a great ground anchor.
I have no tow-bar fitted and there is no evidence of the rear bumper having contacted the floor despite extensive off-roading. (Some may say I'm not trying hard enough - but I mention skill and planning). In off-road suspension height there is a a lot of clearance in the D3 even with the fixed bar. On the older Classic and D1/2 without the benefit of lifts or air suspension it was a no no.
In the past my Freelander lost the rear bumper only being recovered in extremely deep mud - not likely in Wales.
For SF and Happy Valley you can leave the towbar on anyway, might grind and bump but you will always be able to reverse back and alter course.

Yes I have had it act like a plough the first time I went off road in thick gluppy clay mud. It had an extension plate on the back which is now removed and gives another inch or 2 clearance.
As its a fixed bar and needed on a fairly regular basis it's not easy to remove for the odd day off roading.
Thanks for the advice. D3 HSE TDV6 Auto. Bonatti Grey.

don't take a D3 up The Bast*rd unless you want to wreck the front nearside wing on the railway sleeper step and i don't think road tyres would cope with the river bank rock face plus when i was there last (about a month ago) in my D1 I saw that someone has kindly taken a digger and dug out a massive step right near the beginning before the river crossing. Prob a good idea as that will prevent the uninitiated from going any further. A D3 would crush its rear bumper on it I reckon, and any towbar on a D3 would defy cause probe. Im doing it this weekend in the D1 so will update

Benp went through the 'bomb hole' with no drama's when we did Strata. His trick was to raise the suspension using the IID Tool

Did it at the beginning of November (2013) after a heavy rain the day and night before. However on the drive to the start (first crossing) we made the decision that we would turn back if it was fast flowing, as it is not always the depth of the water but the speed.
It is well signposted following the Trailwise markers to save any confusion.
Also did it on the Pot Noodle back in 2011, can anyone remember what the rain was like on the day before (Friday)
Yes we were there for that and the weather the few days before and the Friday was bad, in fact many of the roads on the way there were washed out or flooded but we did it OK in a standard D4 on standard road tyresMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Agreed, I did it in my d2 a few months back and the river crossing was quite deep, but the D2 had a Snorkel at the time.
The rest would be straight forward, as for the fatality, I was under the impression this was caused by the driver messing about its an odd crossing and climb/Drop depending on which way your doing the lane.
We were joined by a bog standard D4 and it had no issues at all.
I drove Strata a week or so after the girl died and the father of the dead girl was there with the police placing flowers at the spot where the incident occurred. The weekend of the incident saw over a months worth of rain fall within a couple of hours and for Wales that is a hell of a lot of rain. The police officer confirmed that at the time the car was swept away the water level had risen to a depth of around 8 feet at the crossing which had been crossed easily a few hours earlier.
