A mate of mine has an 06 Metropolis and it's started to develop a strange fault.
I've searched all the gearbox posts but can't seem to find this exact problem.
When setting off from stopped it holds 1st gear almost like its in command shift but it's not. Sometimes it eventually shifts to 2nd but more often you have to put it across into command shift and change up manually. Doesn't happen every time and no pattern with warm/cold it can happen anytime.
Anyone any ideas? He doesn't like spending money but I've suggested possibly flush and reprogram?

Get him to replace the brake switch above the pedal.
Probably one of the cheaper things to fix.

I have seen both a brake switch, and new software cure this on different cars.
Start with the cheaper option first. If the switch isn't faulty yet, its only a matter of time.My D3 Build Thread

I thought this had happened to me the other day on the way home thinking I needed to get a new switch ASAP then realised I was wearing muddy wellies and my right foot was just scraping the brake pedal.... 26 and on the 4th LR..

Advice on safe working....
The gear selection is getting sticky and I want to remove the gear tray and clean up and lubricate the linkage as shown in this thread (perhaps overconfident now since repairing the tail gate handle and the parking sensors.. Thanks guys).
I wondered about just pumping up the disco to work below but decided axle stands might be a wise precaution! Any suggestions on sources, sizes etc for axle stands.

I have a pair of those stands too - very good - reasonable sized feet to spread the weight as well.
I did make a pair 30years ago when I was at a college workshop experience (I was at Poly at the time!) - they were tested on a press to about 4tonnes - but although I think they would be fine - and they were used for years on standard cars, I wouldn't use them under the D3.Mark.

Can also be caused by non-spec brake bulbs
