It is and Autoglym market the product for that use to stress its anti-mising properties. Their video shows buckets of hot water being placed in the boot to show the effect with steam.
Their regular product is so good at the interior glass I tend to stick with that.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

so, bit of a division in thoughts here chaps
Well, local hardware chap had some Barkeepers friend (£2.75, so pretty cheap methinks), and I've tried it - been over the screen 3 times, cleaned, washed off, cleaned again, etc, and its made some improvement, but certainly not cleared it. I guess I need to do it over and over again, and I've load of white residue that needed cleaning off the scuttle plastic.
Wonder what the hell it is that has coated my screen??

I had a smilar problem with my Mercedes windcreen. Tried vinegar, glass polish but nothing worked so I bought new wipers blades and the problem was solved.Discovery 4 HSE Santorini Black 2012

If you live in a hard water area* and wash your car alot with hard water from the hosepipe, you can get limescale deposits building up that are hard to shift. As others have mentioned, vinegar or other limescale removers should do the trick in a non-abriasive way. Bar Keepers Friend - "Stain Remover" [powder] is good stuff to have in the house - perfect for removing the kids pen marks on the kitchen table - but I've not needed to use it on the car yet. Available for John Lewis I believe..
*No matter where you live, rain is always always soft but it would take a lot of [acid] rain to dissolve the limescale deposits that mains water can produce
P.S. I have PIAA silicone wipers on my second car and these are [expensive but] great. Might try them on the D4 next time but not sure you can get them in the right size for the back window.MY11 D4 SDV6 SE LHD (with remote park heater, heated seats in row 2, heated steering wheel and rear HVAC controls!)

New wipers by themselves are unlikely to do the trick if you have mineral deposits to be dissolved first.
P.S. On my other PIAA silicon equipped car at motorway speed I rarely need to use the wipers as rain just runs up the screen as if you were in a light aircraft in flight or with propwash! They come with a couple of vacuum-packed wipes impregnated with alcohol to help shift the last traces of road grime that may have been left behind with a simple detergent wash which you should use before you first fit them. In use, the action of the wipers over the glass lays down traces of silicon on the screen and this has the same effect as Rain-X or similar.

Try the polish Robbie reccomends, or any glass cutter.
The most extreme I have ever had to be with glass is uding cerium oxide and a polishing machine to polish out a scratch.
Everything you have ried so far as I can gather is chemical warfare, you don' know what the deposit is, a proper glass cutter aka polish should abraisively remove whatever the problem is.
Seconday thought, what is in your washer bottle? Could that be hard water compounding an issue?
When my screen gets greasy and I am short on time I have found mr muscle to be surprisingly good and inexpensive. (Main ingredient vinegar I think)

OK, so some Autoglym the weekend will be my next job
We are in a hard water area, but I tend to go 50/50 water to screenwash mix, and never had this issue on previous 2 D3's.
