Compressor rebuild kit.

Having kept the D3 suspension going for a couple of years with a dodgy height sensor by cycling it up and down once a week: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic70011.h...compressor it’s suddenly got a lot worse again, but judging by the speed it now moves from Access to Standard and then from Standard to Off Road the compressor is tired as well.
It’s very likely that the current problems are the compressor, and the height sensor is still being kept going by exercise.

I’ve splashed out on a complete set of new height sensors anyway, as they were going cheap at under £70 Part no: LR020534.

As far as the compressor goes, I have a spare in the loft that I picked up a couple of years ago, but refitted my original one when the problem persisted.
Before fitting this I’ll microwave the silica gel to refresh that, but also want to rebuild it as much as possible in other respects.

I understand there is a small kit of parts available - LR020590, which I’ll no doubt order from Nick.
EDIT - Or do I need a JPO500010?

What’s contained in this kit?

If it’s just seals then I probably have them already, but it would be nice to think it’s more comprehensive than that.

Thanks

Nasher.

As far as I'm aware, the JPO kit is that used during the Enhancement Programme:

Meant to add:

LR020590 is the delivery valve refurb kit (new valve, spring and seal)

JPO500010 is the above plus an exhaust valve spring upgrade kit (additional spring, spacer, new seal and 4x screws)

Hi Nasher,

I recently had a new air dryer and JPO500010 kit off Nick. I did a bit of a write up on what I did to change the bits on the back of what had others had already put on the forum, including listing the parts.

For what it's worth, I would say it you want to do all you can, get the JPO500010 kit so you can replace more bits Thumbs Up

It's also worth replacing the relay and also get some of the u-clip things for when you put the compressor on... if you don't have any and they snap when you take it off, you can't refit it until you get some... they are not expensive so well worth getting them IMO Smile

Chris.

Chris, did your compressor have the exhaust spring and spacer already fitted (so you changed it) or not?

Yeah it was already fitted, but replaced it to be on the safe side. Figures as I had taken the time to get the compressor off, might as well replace the parts I could. May have been a waste of time / money, but I felt better for it Thumbs Up

Stripped my spare compressor down this evening and microwaved the gel, went from saturated white to a nice clear translucent blue, but took @5 mins.

Have managed to pick up a JPO500010 kit for under a tenner through work which I'll pick up tomorrow.

Just need half a day when I'm not at work or running teenage Nashers around to swap the compressor over.

Has anyone tried one of these piston seal kits?

Well that's that idea of refreshing my spare Censored then Crying or Very sad

First off the delivery valve plug undoes a small amount then feels like it hits something solid and stops.
I've tried working it backwards and forwards but to no avail, it's loose for about 10 degrees then locks up solid.

So I thought I'd have a go at the exhaust valve whilst I thought about it.

The first screw holding the cover down undid easily, but the head just twisted off the second like it was made of chocolate, and has of course left the rest of the screw stuck in the body of the pump.
The other two screws are also very tight.

Plan B is to try the same operations on the Compressor in the car over the weekend and hope I have more luck.

Ahhhhh Nasher that's crap mate Sad

I'm still very new to all of this so I've not got any words of wisdom.... Other than with the exhaust valve, have you got the cover plate held down to keep the pension off the screws? I know when I did mine they were all quite right, but I gave them a good bath in WD40 which I think helped.

When I undid the one screw holding the body of the air dryer onto the body of the compressor, that was solid. Did finally get it out, well kinda. The head twisted off but once it was away, I was able to get the rest of the screw out with some grips. May be the same with the one that the head has come off with yours.

As for the delivery valve, I can't think what it could be hitting on. May be worth more WD in case something a just ceased up, plus a bit of force.

Sorry Nasher, wish I was able to be more helpful.....

Chris.

Thanks Chris.

I'm hoping for more luck with the one on the car.

the images in the LR work instruction appear to show that the end of the plug is castellated, and all I can think of is that there is a build up of corrosion inside the body that one of the parts is touching.
That probably means the unit is beyond repair anyway.

I can set it up in my milling machine to get the broken screw drilled out, but will try the other unit first.

Update

Friday afternoon I whipped the compressor out of the car.
The Valve body that takes a 17mm Spanner just didn’t want to know, even with a 6 point socket it rounded off before budging, so I gave up and tried the exhaust valve cover.
The first screw I tried, very carefully after soaking it in WD-40 for 10mins, just twisted off below the head like chocolate.
I sorted that by drilling it right through and putting an M2 nut and bolt through it.

Is it just me that has Compressors that can’t be rebuilt?

I then removed the Dryer, and found that despite getting rid of the dust and microwaving the Silica a couple of years ago it was completely blocked again, I couldn’t blow through it at all.

I replaced the ‘O’ ring and put on the dryer from my spare(Now known to be Completely Knackered) compressor that I microwaved the contents of last week.

After refitting to the car I found that both airlines were leaking where they exited the dryer.

Unfortunately I didn’t have any stock of the smaller diameter tube that returns to the main body of the compressor, but managed to get it to seal by cutting a few mm off the end and pushing it back in.

Luckily I had some of the larger tube hanging around, so remade the tube that runs from the dryer to the valve block, forming the 180deg bend by pouring boiling water over it to soften it temporarily.

It’s been OK since, and raises far quicker than it did recently.

I’ve still to replace the Height sensors as they’ve not arrived yet, but will be on the look-out for another compressor over the following months.
Might even splash out on a new dryer if it happens again.
