acetone

does anyone add this to their diesel on filling up? i have used it with some success on the old k jet saab petrol engines. wondered if its being added to the diesel engines? i have a source of acetone so cost isn't an issue for me. I'm not sure how much to use in diesel or if the pumps on these will tolerate it?

the acetone breaks the surface tension of the fuel and allows for better atomisation of it when injected into the cylinder. it certainly works to allow more boost on the saabs when used in conjunction with some cellulose thinners. more boost and less knock.

Used to use it for other commercial reasons but it was a solvent which used to eat plastics rubber and dissolve most things it touched...despite the health issues....can't imagine it would do your fuel tank or pump any good at all Shocked

in two/three years of using it in my old saabs it has never caused any issues with damaging rubber or plastic components. i tend to use 150ml max in a ten gallon fill up. also a gallon of thinners and a half cup of castrol r engine oil as i think it helps the fuel pump deal with the scouring/dry thinners. it smells nice too. several studies have claimed in small volumes like i use it causes no damage. it certainly improves the burn on the forced induction petrol engine.

Is that from experience ? I have read the pumps on these high pressure systems don't like anything but good diesel. Is this what you mean?

Pretty much on the nail. The HP fuel system does nothing but move fuel and as long as an additive is not corrosive to any part of the fuel system or reduces lubricity it will deliver it to the engine ok. Acetone (and indeed petrol, which is not that dissimilar in its properties when fed to an engine) is bad as it reduces lubricity and increases the wear on the HP fuel system. Whilst the increased wear is not desirable in itself the real damage is done downstream when the microscopic bits of metal from the HP system meet the injectors.

Acetone should be fine in your old Saab or indeed any low pressure diesel system. There are other additives that do not impact the lubricity or actually slightly increase it.

That's an interesting answer thanks, I won't be using it in the discovery then. It's a fairly cheap benefit in the turbo saabs though. Thanks again, john.
