Massive fuel leak!

Hi all,

I'm a bit of a lurker over here compared to the Defender site.. But I now require your words of wisdom if I may...

I'm currently over in France, and have a massive fuel leak! And I mean, huge! Was fine on Sunday, and suddenly started on Monday.
It appears to be coming from under the drivers seat area. It is at such a stage now where it is like a constant torrent of Diesel. It only appears to be when the engine is running.

Has anybody got any ideas as to what may be wrong?

Thanks in advance.
Pete

Diesel return pipe adrift? Situated to the rear of the cylinder head - this may run down and drop from below drivers seat?

What year is the car?If its is 07 then the fuel filter is almost directly under drivers seat and have had one in the past where the water separator started leaking

DiscoStu- Would that not affect the running if the engine? It runs absolutely fine!
Tom- yep, it's an 07. I don't think it's the filter, as this was changed not so lomg ago.
Confused

return line leak won't affect the engine. As the filter has just been changed it's the FIRST place I would look!

What NoDo$h said.

Return line would normally smoke, as the diesel drips on the exhaust manifold.

Well it's not the fuel filter! Just checked that! Where can I find the return line?
Strange thing is that it doesn't smoke, and there's no loss of performance etc.
(Sorry for all the basic questions- I'm more used to a Defender!)

Excess fuel is pumped (at low pressure) to the engine, ensuring that there is always fuel if required. Unused fuel is returned - I've had this pipe come off before. Resulted in a lot of smoke as it was falling on the exhaust manifold, but doesn't affect performance.

It will be at the rear (under the lip at the bottom of the windscreen). Mine went on the passenger side, *guessing* it's duplicated....

If its under the drivers seat then it could be the fuel filter, but in the same area on top of the engine at the drivers side are the two metal fuel pipes one has the bleed screw on it check that its been tightened fully as this would show in the same place below.

Flack Thumbs Up

Hi all,
Thanks very much for your help. It turned out to be the sensor on the fuel filter (water in fuel sensor), that had been over tightened on service by the main dealer, causing it to crack!

Very easy to do - they really only need finger tight and split very easily. Glad you got it sorted and thanks for reporting back Thumbs Up
