New tax law query?

As some of you know i bought another Disco at the weekend. Under new law the tax isn't transferable to me (plus it ran out in August) so my question is-

Under the new law does the tax run from the end of the month still or the day it is bought?

If its month, whats the earliest i can tax my car to start on the 1st of November so as not to loose a month by taxing now and it starting on the 1st of october??

Thanks guys

As far as I've read, you have to pay a whole month so tax now and you have to pay for all of October.

Thats what i thought. In that case it can stay in the garage until next weekend and get taxed then. I refuse to pay £50 for a weeks tax Censored

As soon as you've purchased it you become liable for tax. The V5C will have been sent off stating the date of sale. Your on a hiding to nothing to try and avoid it until November.

No i haven't driven it Whistle . So basically i have paid for October twice as i see it Censored Censored Censored

Paid for years tax on old car but will only get refunded from 1st november, new car will be taxed from 1st October so am paying for tax on 2 cars this month (almost £100!! Shocked )

Surely the new system would be fairer if the tax liability date started on the day of sale/purchase and taht way refunds would also be fairer

Just another way of skanking the motorists Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head

Your right. Thumbs Up

There's a lengthy Q&A blog on the DVLA site.

I got annoyed because I picked up a new car on 29th September, but ended up having to have the tax run from 1st. They don't do 12 months and so many days on a new car now. Rolling Eyes

Car Tax Query.....

Just a curious question......slightly related.....

If the car is still in tax from the previous owner who surrenders the Tax Disc to DVLA following on from the sale of the car to a new owner, the DVLA will only refund full months... to technically the car is still taxed to the end of the month under the previous owners name......

If as a new purchaser you Tax it from the start of the following month, it would theoretically be taxed concurrently.........

So, if I were to buy a car, drive it home it would be taxed and would remain taxed in the eyes of DVLA/ANPR Systems until the existing disc was surrendered, cancelled and then refunded, then I tax it..?

The DVLA have been like all Govt departments running a massively negative budget for some years, hence the closure of all of the VRO's etc. what we must understand by them creating low and zero rates of taxation to promote low emission vehicles has had a huge impact in their overall income. That added to the reduced taxation from the fuel duty because cars have become so much more efficient has led to the Govt having to come up with clever alternatives to raise revenue.

Hence the sale of plates, the new taxation rules etc etc... What this new regulation also helps out is continuous registration.....

There is a massive black hole as far as the DVLA are concerned which relates to a large number of 2-3 year old cars disappearing of their radar and no longer being taxed....what was actually happening was that this figure of untaxed vehicles was in the main 2-3 year old prestige cars being exported to foreign climes. Unlike the German Authorities here in the UK we have no necessity to deregister cars and obtain an export certificate or temporary registration. The cars just turn up at Felixstowe or Portsmouth are loaded and disappear forever... Hence DVLA think there are lots of drivers evading VEL, because they have never been informed they had left the Country.

Thumbs Up No worries. I think as DSL says it would be better to get rid of it altogether but I don't see that happening but this is at least fairer.
