Opening tailgate with engine running

Hi and I may as well start with an apology as I'm sure that there something obvious that I'm not doing but I can't find a way to open the tailgate when the engine is running.

Each week I drop someone off after shopping and he gets out and tries to get his shopping out of the boot. He can't, so I make sure the car is unlocked and it still doesn't work. I've also used the key and this does nothing. The only way I can get it to open is by turning off the engine. Is this right? Because it seems pretty strange to me. I'm not sure if its something to do with keyless entry or maybe something I've set up incorrectly but its frustrating. Any advice would be appreciated and in the likely event that I've just been a numpty please keep gloating down to medium-high levels. Cheers Steve

It is a safety feature, from memory the handbrake has to be on and out of gear then press the unlock button and it should open I think.

Yes! Its happened to a few people, when your at lights or pulling away...the only time it happened to me was when i pulled in to sell it - for some reason i pressed the button instead of the PDC button on the 2013 you can stop it fully opening but you cant tell it to close from the button

Yeah this got me too, until I figured out you need to set it in "P" for the tailgate to open.

I can see where they (LR) are coming from on this, as it helps stop the contents of your boot being robbed, while stopped at traffic lights for instance. Initially I found it incredibly annoying, but Ive got somewhat used to it over time.

But nonetheless there are moments still when I need to get something out of the boot & get caught out by this Rolling Eyes
