Little red Handle

Hi all
The other day I was cleaning out my car. At some point I had managed to get coke in to the cup holder to clean them out properly I thought I would pull them out and clean them in the house. Under the cup holders is a red pull leaver thing. What's it for I had a quick look in the book but could not see anything I might have just missed it. My guess is its eather for the electronic hand brake or the rotary gearbox. Any way some one put me straight cheers. Very Happy

You have found the mysterious cloaking device actuator! Do not pull it unless you want your Discovery to become invisible to pedestrians and BMW drivers alike.

Oh - too late! It alread is.

Yep, Land Rover put nothing about the red leaver in the handbook, god knows why.

They also put nothing in the handbook detailing how to get the gearbox out of Park for recovery.

The two issues above are linked. Wink

If you delve further you'll find a metal wire with a loop at the end of it. While one is linked to releasing the gearbox, the other is linked to releasing the parking brake.

Pulling the red handle usually results in a trip to the Dealer for a reset, pulling the wire doesn't (usually)

Why do you need a trip to the dealer for the gearbox park release?

The only time I've seen one pulled in anger was on a 2012MY RRS and it put the gearbox into a limp home mode that even the best efforts of an experienced LRE instructor could not resolve, hence trip to Dealer.
Maybe I should have said "could result in a trip to a Dealer" rather than "usually results in a trip to a Dealer"!!!

Jags..

with the KNOB have the red lever...

...reading the handbook this is for releasing the park mode etc if you have to tow or winch & the park position is being used.
often used at the dealers when they have a car in the showroom with a dead battery to move.....

PS I just hate the Knob...would give anything for the logical & elegant J gate....on my XK

FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

There was a topic about how to use the red handle to unlock the gearbox when stuck in Park.
