Confused my gearbox today...

Doing about 75mph,I decided to overtake a slower moving car.As we were approaching an uphill section where the A1 goes from 2 lanes to 1 , I applied a bit more right foot than usual, but certainly not overly aggressive.
Normally the car would drop 1 gear ie 8th to 7th at that speed (1800 rpm).... This time it dropped a few cogs and the revs shot instantly to the red line.
It took a second or 2 before the electronics sorted everything out and changed back up again,at the same time as I eased off......
As I was watching the revs with some concern, while the gearbox electronics tried to sort it out,the wife told me she had seen a large puff of blue exhaust in the wing mirror.
While that doesn't bother me,as I'm sure I just have nice clean cylinders now,I was more concerned that the electronics allowed the engine to aggressively red-line in the first place.
I'm a bit new to automatic gearboxes, and usually pretty mechanically sympathetic,so is kick-down purely determined by torque and rpm ?
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, because tbh,it was a bit concerning at the time...?

Euan,

Were you in sports mode or normal "D"

I find it will drop more than 1 gear if you shove it but not found it go straight to red line.

I have found using the "paddles" to change down I cannot force it to red line

Was overtaking today and I shoved it a bit Whistle Must have dropped 3 gears and went to over 4000 rpm as it worked its way up the gears. Bit difficult to be exact as I was watching the road and getting comments from swimbo and the same time. Rolling Eyes
