Buying first Discovery 4 - novice needs advice!

Hi all,
I was hoping for some of your knowledge! I have talked my OH into a used discovery 4 and our budget will stretch to a 2010 model. I don't know much about cars so was hoping for some advice - which would you go for?

HSE that looks lovely but with more mileage/less warranty
http://www.usedvehicles.landrover.co.uk/search?t=1...

or GS with less mileage and more warranty left?
http://www.usedvehicles.landrover.co.uk/search#/de...

There is also an XS for sale - any thoughts on what we should go for? I like the HSE (obviously!) but want to make sure we're making the right choice as we don't have a lot of car knowledge.

Thanks in advance

Hi Hubert

Welcome to the best LR forum for the best LR vehicle in the range, and dare I say it, one of the best all round vehicles in the world Thumbs Up

If you can, I would say get the HSE, purely because of the residuals. I had an XS and although a great car, I enjoy some of the refinements of the HSE. The XS you talk about might have some of those refinements on so without knowing the spec, I'd say go for the HSE. The link you provided did'nt take me to the actual car so I don't know the mileage, but if it's a LR dealer car I'd say go for it and make sure you get a decent warranty!! Thumbs Up

Thanks for the response Paul! I have been hankering after one for ages Smile

The HSE I found on the LR website has 99K on the clock so I'm assuming also won't have much warranty left on it. Its priced v low at just under 24K. It’s a high mileage but I won't be adding much to it, maybe 5k per year and planning on keeping it for 3-4 years.

There was also a GS for £25 with almost 70K. As someone wanting the pretty but not knowing much about cars(!) I would automatically go for the HSE but it would be good to know more of an expert opinion.

The XS I was sent by a friend had a great high spec but I didn't like the colour (ipanema sand) so maybe I can be open to another if we see one. We have an appt tomorrow with Lookers LR to see what they have on offer.

If the LR warranty has almost run out, is it best to try to buy an extended warranty from them and how much should I be looking at? I need all the advice I can get! Smile

The XS will have tinted windows, leather seats, Sat Nav and many bits similar to the HSE. Warranty should be considered carefully as well as mileage as large 4x4s can be expensive to repair as they age.

It is always a personal choice but an old car salesman friend used to say, buy the newest car that you can afford!

Disco 4 is a beautiful car and a pleasure to drive henc the "Permagrin" seen on owners. Very Happy

If it's purchased from a LR dealer you will get 12 months warranty and LR assist as part of their approved used scheme Thumbs Up

I went for the HSE because my budget allowed, I could have got a newer one but lower spec but I considered that somebody else had already taken most of the hit on depreciation and that the HSE would be more desirable for selling on in the future and hold it's value more.

Saying that I didn't buy it to save money or as an investment Smile but purely for the practicality and all round superb performance plus the toys that the HSE came with. Mr. Green

In summary it's the dogs danglies and I think it's great Thumbs Up

Thanks guys, I guess we will see what the dealership have to offer tomorrow - very excited! I guess I just want to make sure after all my begging and convincing we choose the right car.

Will report back with what they have to say - we're not going to commit to anything tomorrow so may be back for more from you well informed lot Smile

Hey mate,

I have just been though the exact same thing. I am in AUS so our specs are slightly different but step up in variants is similar. The question is what do you like about the disco and what do you want from it? I wanted/needed all the toys in the HSE so went for that, If I hadn't I would have regretted it. If you don't really mind about not getting the toys then go for as new as possible and with the most warrantee.
The diesel engine should last for a long time if well maintained as should the other components, i wouldn't worry about some mileage, even better if you know how well the car was looked after by the previous owner.

If it's the hse at marshall melton then it sold about 2 weeks ago, there are quite a few hse's in the midlands around 27k, i've gone for a lowly 2011 d4 gs ,hope i made the right choice.

Another word of caution...

You also need to check what warranty they are giving. On a 99k car you may only get 'select' rather than 'approved' and there is a considerable difference between the two Thumbs Up

Proper warranty is under 5 years and 75k miles. Unless it's under 3 years which will have manufacturer unlimited mileage.

I have had some high milage cars in the past and they have served me very well and I would not hesitate about buying another providing it met the right criteria, I would be wanting to know more about the history of the car, what the previous driver had used it for and what sort of miles, 5 miles serious off road can take more out of a vehicle than 100 miles sat on a motorway at 70mph. These are rugged off road vehicles and some disconcerting drivers drive them to the limit, particularly if they don't own them and that includes lease or contract hire. Don't forget the big 105k mile service, get it included in the price if you can.
If its done motorway miles and you can get the 105k service thrown with full main dealer service history I would buy it Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
