Indicators flash on door closing !

Bit of a strange one that I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced........

When I have either my trailer attached, or my bike rack on the D4, when I get out & close a door, the indicators give one flash !!

I thought I was going nuts & imagining things for a while, but last night I confirmed I was seeing what I was seeing. Mrs Zeb & I were heading out for a cycle. Popped the Thule rack on the hitch, plugged in the electrics, loaded the bikes, then opened the rear passenger door to put in our vizzy vests, helmets etc. when I closed the door, the indicators flashed once !!

On repeated opening & closing of the door, I couldn't get it to do it again.

We drove to where we starting our cycle. Parked the Disco, we both got out, Mrs Zeb left her door open, as did I. I got here to go around to the back & watch the indicators & when I closed my door, they gave one flash. Once again, no matter how often we opened & closed a door, we couldn't get another flash.

It didn't happen after our cycle, or after getting home, which leads me to think it may be a random event Confused

As I said at the outset, I've also thought it has happened when my trailer was attached, but with the brighter summer evenings I could never be sure, but last night with the darker evening, I was sure.

So......... anyone else experienced this ???

if you open an shut your boot whilst the car is locked, you get "one Flash" I think its to show the boot has relocked

Yes and I think that it is normal behaviour. D4 sends a 'pulse' the first time the doors open and trailer electrics are connected (provided that it also knows trailer electrics are fitted by a CCF change), this causes the indicators to flash. I believe that it is to do with the monitoring system of how it 'checks' that the trailer lights are working correctly.

Of course others may be along with more accurate information shortly.

Thing is though, it only happens when a door is closed, not when opened Confused Question

Yes, well I wasn't being that specific to open or close as I couldn't really remember at the time. I still think that what you are seeing is completely normal behaviour.

Thumbs Up

Have you seen it happen on your Disco Question

The only thing is, I don't think there is a pattern to this, as in, it happens the first time a door is closed, after a trailer is attached, it gives a flash. The other night it only happened two out of four times.

Once when the bike rack was mounted & plugged in when the rear passenger door was closed.

Then again, when we arrived at our staring point when I turned off the Disco, got out & closed the drivers door.

But not when we finished up from our cycle, or when we got home. So if there was a pattern, you'd think that based on the first two events, it should happen again after we unlocked the Disco after getting back from the cycle & again, once we got home. But it didn't, so it appears to me at least for now, that this is a random event.

I'm going to have to try to establish a pattern here, if there is one, or at least prove that it's random.

Do you have genuine or aftermarket electrics fitted? Have seen Sh*tpart electrics causing all kinds of issues on D4's...

Never fully understood the pulse sent around the system, or its timing. If any of the light clusters are removed when it happens it also logs fault codes which remain active even when clusters are reattached. The pulse is supposed to be brief enough not to trigger the lights but I wonder if it gets confused with the door signal and causing the lights to actually illuminate?

The pulse the car sends to the trailer is checking to see if a trailer is connected.
If you then lock the car, and then remove the trailer plug, the alarm will activate. The disco realises that someone is trying to steal the trailer.
It's purely to give added protection to any trailer connected. It's in the vehicle handbook.
The same thing happens with my Touareg.

Well my car must not care about the trailer as you can remove and replace it whenever and the alarm does not sound.
