The camping and caravan club are asking for every one to write to there euro MP
full dialog of communication
Robert Louden MBE, The Club's Director General, is urging all caravan owners to write to their MEP to oppose calls for the introduction of caravan MOTs.
The European Parliament has put forward an amendment to the European Commission's proposals for caravan and trailer road worthiness that would introduce an MOT-style test for caravans.
If the proposed changes to current legislation becomes law, it will affect caravans with a Maximum Authorised Mass of more than 750kg and trailers over 2,000kg.
Robert Louden MBE said:
"The Club fully supports all measures to make our roads safer. However, there is no evidence to suggest road worthiness testing would improve road safety and I would urge members to write to their MEP outlining their concerns and opposition. Caravans have been singled out in these proposals and that is completely unfair."
According to Club and industry research, the primary causes for accidents involving caravans in the UK are driving too fast for the conditions, overloading, poor weight distribution, a poor car-caravan match, and tyre condition.
We have already written to all MEPs but are urging you to do the same. The matter is due to be discussed again. If passed, it would apply from January 1 2018.
Details for local MEPs can be found at http://www.europarl.org.uk/en/your_MEPs.html and the panel below highlights the key points to put forward in your correspondence.
Key points to raise with your MEP
• Only about one per cent of all accidents involved a towed unit, and the majority of those weighed more than 3,500kg.
• The main causes of accidents involving trailers are speed; overloading; poor weight distribution; a poor car-caravan match; and tyre condition. These are not necessarily matters that can be rectified by road worthiness checks.
• The cost of implementing tests would be better spent on education.
• Caravans have been unfairly singled out in the proposals.
Thank you for your help, we'll keep you updated. Tintenter

I'd heard a rumour about this and I don't think it's a bad idea, just to make sure breaks work etc.
I had to take a driving test to be able to tow my tintent and again I think that it is a good idea, it makes sure your at an ok standard.

I don't think it's particularly aimed at caravans but all trailers including the old farm ones! Unfortunately there are a large number of fatalities and serious accidents by trailers uncoupling themselves or by the trailers invariably rotting away and causing accidents....
I see so many horse boxes being dragged around with expensive horses in but rotten floors! People don't seem to care!

This has been banging on for a few years. I personally think it's a good idea, how many trailers, especially boat trailers have no brakes, trailers with bald, cracked and out of date tyres, cracked chassis and bent axles. Hitches with so much wear they are useless. Wheels wobbling because the bearings are shot. The amount of trailers I see with no lights working is staggering.
Or they could just employ more police to make the roads safer(!) You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

This is the daft thing about this law they are trying to bring in, you see all sorts of poorly maintained trailers out and about, yet they are only targeting Caravans All the builders trailers with broken lights, cut tyres, missing mudguards, no brake away cable will be exempt. The only good thing about it if it comes in and it is then implemented that you need to be registered like other parts of the EU, is it should deter a lot of the caravan thefts, it seems than caravan theft in other countries is rare and is thought to be because of the separate registration scheme.

The Caravan and Camping club are bang out of order opposing MOTs for caravans and trailers.
They should be serviced and checked over annually by a competent person.
We have a caravan less then 3 years old and has been serviced annually as required by the warranty conditions.
Less then 3 years old, less then 5000 miles travelled since new, less then 1200 miles since the last service two bolts holding the over run brake tow hitch to the caravan chassis disapeared. This is what attaches the caravan to the towing vehicle! Imagine the possible consequences if it become detached from the towing vehicle on the motorway??
One of our twin axle trailers I noticed when parked up was a damaged wheel and a gouge round the tyre. That wheel is still holding air, but it will not go onto the public road again until that wheel and tyre has been replaced.
Bring on compulsory testing of caravans and trailers.

Because the next idiot that comes towards me on my side of the road overtaking around a corner may well lose their licence. As it stands as long as he wasn't speeding he'll get away with driving like a No-one bothers to indicate any more and who really cares what lane they're in when going around a roundabout, as long as you aren't speeding, you can get away with anything because there are no police about.
Same can be said for a dangerous unroad worthy trailer/caravan, more police will mean more will get stopped and seized making the roads safer. As for more fines, well that isn't true, unless you tow a dangerous trailer or drive like a
