Tom Tom no GPS signal

Has anyone else experienced loss of GPS signal to Tom Tom when unit is placed in the centre of the windscreen? I'm sure something must be blocking it as it works in my husband's car without a problem (and also works if I hold it out the window, which is fine when driving on my slow country lanes but not so good when on the motorway... Very Happy )

Heated screen elements interfering with the signal?

Well, maybe, but my Tomtom works OK in the D3 with a heated screen, and was also OK in my FFRR which had heating elements and some kind of sound absorbing coating.

The OP says "... centre of the screen...." - does it work if you have it to the side?

Thanks for the answers so far. I've tried placing it on the right hand side of the steering wheel and it does seem to work. Only problem is I can't keep it there as it's right over the airbag and I believe it's dangerous to place anything there. Could it be something to do with the thing that looks like a speaker (please forgive my total ignorance) that's on the centre of the dash just below the windscreen?

I did search the forums for any problems relating to this issue but found nothing which I find odd, there must be something strange about my car. Neutral

I don't know about the D3, but my van has this problem, and it's to do with the thermal properties of the windscreen. Something about the windscreens in cars with AC have a coating/layer in them to help eliminate solar gain Thumbs Up

When off road I use a asus tablet with a built in gps, this worked fine in my MY2011 D4 mounted in the centre of the windscreen just above the built in screen BUT on my MY2012 it doesn't work. it can't get a gps lock, there is something in the MY2012 that wasn't in the MY2011 that totally blocks the signal. I get around it with my tablet by using one of THESE in the corner of the screen Thumbs Up

Maybe so. Seem reasonable, but doens't explain why the OP's Tomtom works OK when it's fitted towards the edge of the screen?

Hairy Dan, that's brilliant. At less than 10 quid one of those is definitely worth a try. And mine is a MY2012 so maybe that explains it. Thank you. Very Happy

My TomTom works beautifully in a 2009 D3.

I mount it in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

It's a D4. Maybe the screen is different to the D3 / FFRR screen?

That's where I have to position my Tom Tom. I'm guessing it picks up some of the more lateral satellites...... Only guessing though Thumbs Up

My Tom Tom sits in the hole in the dash where the satnav/control screen is on the higher spec models. It works fine but I agree that it is slower to pick up the satellites than when bottom right on screen. It can also lose the satellites for a few seconds but nothing to cause too much of a problem Whistle I found that inconvenience less than it dropping off the screen and falling under the brake pedal Shocked which it did despite cleaning screen and suction pad.

When you have to replace your screen, just make sure Autoglass do it...
All your gps gadgets will probably work fine after that. Whistle

Seriously... could it be anything to do with the DAB radio? I have a road angel gem that conflicts with the DAB radio - i.e.. they wipe each other out. switch to FM and all is fine.

Lol - replacing the windscreen seems a bit drastic but I'll keep it in mind... I do have the radio on DAB so I'll switch to FM & see if that helps. Thx.
