Temperamental brake light

G'day land lovers, Having a nightmare trying to track down a faulty brake light/wire... firstly attempted to take out a supposedly blown globe to gain the details I needed to replace, globe didn't look to be blown so I put it back in and it worked for about two weeks. Tried again, it lasted a week. Checked all wires and connections at the tail light they all look…OK??? Any thoughts? Rolling Eyes

I have been plagued by this in the past. In my case I was using budget no-name bulbs (OK, so I paid a premium for them at a boy racers parts store, but they were carp). My bulb blown indicator would come on on the dash (not my D3 then Laughing ) and would then go out a few minutes later and maybe stay off for several days before it would repeat.

I eventually caught the sucker in its broken state. The two wires either side of the tungsten element were just bent over and crimped to trap the element. On one side the overlap was too short and the hot element had managed to break free. Going over a bump would free the element, breaking contact until the next bump arc-welded the filament to the wire again.

Because the element was so rigid, there was less than 1mm gap even when broken. It was only once I'd found it and got a strong lens on it I could see the carnage of multiple tiny welds on the support wire.

Removing the other three bulbs I'd replaced at the same time showed the whole batch had the same fault. Ditched them all and replaced with a reputable brand, no more agro.

Hope your issue is so simple.
