So are you saying that Bear Grylls wasn't in the SAS, albeit the reserves? Are you also saying he wasn't an instructor in survival for the SAS?
I don't give a flying fig about which action man is what, but it does make me curious why people accuse one of being a hero and one a clown who has never been in the "proper" Army, do the SAS recruit clowns and then get them to train more clowns I think we need to realise what is TV and what is real.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I can't believe I had to get to the end of page 2 before chalky started ranting
For once he is right though. Lofty is the man. Did a cracking course with him many moons ago and loved it.
It's funny living where I do as you get a lot of pretend sas in town (signals attached who think they are it!)
You get wirey quiet blokes who 'work away a lot'
Then you get the old generation (2 of my neighbours) who have mostly written a book etc Lofty. Peter Scholey. Bob Podesta
Been round Lofty's house a couple of times when I was shagging his mate 007's daughter (she was miss Bond and her old man is Jimmy) and he is such a sound down to earth guy unlike Bear

By not giving a flying fig about what action man does what you are clearly confused with what is TV and what is real !
Take TV !
Danny Nightingale ! On the pages within this site there are those that think he was sniper and a soldier of the highest calibre !
There are those that also know that you cannot beat the system ! Despite being a soldier in one of the most respected units in the world he tried and failed however the TV lead you to believe he was a model soldier despite having an illegal firearm. If you serve in the Regiment you are constantly monitored !
Jake, imagine you lived in another area of the country ? If you saw bob in the pub would you think "I bet he's in the SAS"
As for the Clown, there are those that know that the Artists Rifles is a drinking club for toffs and they are despised by the RGT and disowned !
You will not find a regular serving or otherwise who has a good word to say about 21 or 23 !
In fact wait a few months and you will see how respected they are ?Only dead fish go with the Flow !

Surely Chalky there is good and bad in every walk of life, I've met enough "professional" soldiers that are complete prats and enough that are great blokes, it doesn't make me judge all soldiers as prats or all great blokes.
You can't take it away from BG he did a course that probably most people on here would fail as well, he has climbed Mount Everest most of us would fail at that too. Like it or not he is an inspirational figure to youngsters and has used his "celebrity" to attract kids to the scouting movement and get them in the real world. I respect the guy for having made a success of his career and not running down others doing so.
Mr Mears from what I have seen surrounds himself with ex forces people, who when helping him with his DSC1 come out with crass comments like, "I've shot more humans than I have deer" and slags off BG at every opportunity.
I don't give a flying fig because I do realise that TV is all made up to entertain so there is no confusion. If by spinning a good yarn children are encouraged into the real outdoors then great, but whittling a few spoons and having your mug on the BDS stand doesn't hit the spot with kids!DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Yes I agree, he has monopolised a niche for himself, but in my honest "professional" capacity I think that Baden Powell was a far better role model for kids than a lying bluffing Walt !
I didn't know Baden Powell though so he might well have been a clown as well but when I was in the cubs I looked up to him !
I understand of course that kids do need role models but Grylls calling out to the kids in the village where I live hasn't worked ? Times have changed and they look to different Role Models now ! Mostly as you say Celebrity's ? But fortunately not all kids are that gullible !
My 9 YO wouldn't entertain the cubs ? He knows that's not the real world and he doesent need me to tell him that ! He knows I've been in Army he's seen some pictures and picks up on conversations.
I'm still working with most of the blokes I served with, I know they are all good blokes, that's the thing with the military system it separates the wheat from the Chaff but some do slip through the net.
Turning up for a couple of afternoons a month does not a soldier make ! Everest or not !
I will quote a good friend of mine who was Orderly Sergeant when a TA soldier was brought back to camp where he was on a course, he had been down town gobbling off and ! Like all the fat signallers do !
See Jakes post for clarification ?
He had punched a Civvy cos that's what all squadies do and in the scuffle said other was shoved through a glass shop door and was in a bad way !
The Orderly sergeant explained to this chap that IF the hit the fan he would have to instruct a solicitor, he asked this lad a simple question ? if he wanted the best ?
Off the Bench ! Some one who had done it for years and who had trained long and hard for his chosen profession ? Some one who had helped people before and some one who would help people again ?
OR
Shall I just ring anybody who already has a job as a plumber but who specialises in law in their spare time ?
The chap broke down in tears as he realised he was in the !
Anyway
I still stand by my respect for Mears, and as for the DSC level 1 course if it was an instructor I probably know the bloke who was gobbling off about shooting people too !
Trust me ! He's shot a LOT of deer !
I've shot with him, in fact he's probably the best shot I've seen ?Only dead fish go with the Flow !

Getting this thread back on track - there are some photos here from the March 09 Bison Bushcraft course that a few of us from here went on. Bloody cold in the mornings, I recall.

Chalky aren't you seeing life just through Army eyes? My old man did his NS with the Paras as a fat signaller (if you can be called fat at 8st), does that make him a Walter Mitty?! He never punched anyone through a window, nor did he think that professional soldiers were better or worse, just different - lets face it 2 world wars weren't only professional soldiers and this isn't about who is a good soldier.
You cannot take it away from the guy he did pass what most would agree is a very tough test and very few people have stood on the roof of the world, BG is one of them!
You probably do know the chap gobbing off and he isn't any different to your TA bod in my opinion, acting the big man to impress people but actually being a prat.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Been round Lofty's house a couple of times when I was shagging his mate 007's daughter (she was miss Bond and her old man is Jimmy) and he is such a sound down to earth guy unlike Bear
Lofty, "Right, lads. Obstacle crossing. This, very tall brick chimney behind me is an obstacle. Anyone want to have a go at getting over it?"
No hands go up.
Corporal Keen (as in he was very keen), "Aw it, I'll give it a go."
Lofty, "Well done Corporal Keen, do your best. As for the rest of you......tut, tut, no balls."
So Cpl Keen assesses the chimney and begins to climb the 'obstacle'. After 8-10 feet he is struggling but doesn't want to admit defeat (after all this is in front of WO1 John 'Lofty' Wiseman and the rest of Training Squadron). Very quickly he reaches the conclusion that the task is impossible and, to be frank, a bit silly. After all why would you climb a bloody great chimney when all you have to do is walk around it?
Cpl Keen looks around. Not a soul in sight. "You feckin b ds ! And like a pillock, I actually fell for it!"
Big laughs afterwards and a wink from Lofty.
"What? Who was Cpl Keen? Why, that would be me."
Still waiting, like Chalky, for Ken's name.

MY goodness so much pent up anger and frustration ... I only asked for a fun course to do with a bit of survival/bushcraft thrown in and I appear to have woken up a couple of grumpy old greens.
So... seeing as they're just chomping at the bit....
Ken's full name is Ken Hames, he's a thoroughly nice chap, and they way he unfolds himself out of his rather lovely 90 I'd say you're a brave man to say otherwise...
of course now I'm sure he'll be discredited, the fact he's worn green, red and sand berets completely negated and the fact he's done some telly obviously means the guy is a softie.

Never been in the SBS though has he?
On a serious note, I'm sure he has a wealth of knowledge to part with. I bet he wouldn't mind you asking.
